I guess when I installed my bags, I didnt realize that when I aired out my exhaust flange was being pushed into my gas tank, well just got home, and smelt gas. Put the car in the air and I have a pin size hole in the tank. Sucks I just put $50 in gas in it about a half hour ago. I have tomorrow off, so if anything I can drop the tank if I have to, but is there a way to patch it from the outside?

Go buy a new one. If you find someone who is crazy enough to try for gods sake take it out of the car 1st.

Pretty sure my neighbor has a mk4 gti gas tank sitting in his field he'd probably sell if you need another one although I'm sure it can be patched. It's just plastic.

If you want a repair instead of a replacement, I would use this stuff. Ive had good luck with it in the past. http://www.acehardware.com/product/i...03&cagpspn=pla

If it's really just a pin hole... try and repair first. Be sure inspect your work often though as to avoid going up in flames. GL

For reference if anyone else is searching, most gas tanks made of plastic are h.d.p.e (high density polyethylene) and can be patched with an appropriatehdpe epoxy after they are drained.

If hdpe is soluble in a heavy petroleum distillate such as pure acetone, you can make your own by dissolving hdpe filings in the distillate, it will bond and harden when exposed to air....I make my own abs and pvc putty this way.

We used a tire plug patch kit to repair a fuel tank on my new beetle. It was only a temp until the new one came in monday but held all weekend.
