Thread: 508 miles on a single tank

  1. 08-18-2012 11:24 AM #1
Just made a round trip to New Orleans and squeezed out 508 miles from the tank. The DIS says it averaged 38mpg and done by hand I got 38.2. Every VW/Audi I've owned has always been extremely close like that but I wanted to make before claiming almost 40 mpg average. I kept my speed to around 60 mph and used the cruise control as much as possible. Luckily the entire length of I-10 that runs through Louisiana is extremely flat so that helped out. The last 45 miles or so before NOLA it was raining hard which made the mpg drop to ~32 and then traffic piled up so it was stop and go for a while. Without that and the jam around Lake Charles I would have easily averaged over 40 mpg.

On a long stretch of flat ground I reset the 2nd mpg average and got these numbers doing 60 mph for over 20 miles. It would move around from 41 mpg to around 48 mpg which gives the average you see below.

    What's your best so far?

I believe TechnoBlue has a turbo. If so, this is awesome, and beats my best handily. I'm going on a long road trip next weekend, so I'll have a chance to see what I can achieve. I won't be limiting my speed to 60mph though (and AC probably will be running), so probably won't come close.

    GTarr

GTarr is correct, I have a no options Turbo with a DSG.

I normally don't drive like that when I make this trip but I was curious and had plenty of time. This trip took over 5 hours and previous ones have taken right around 4 hours (big thanks to my Valentine one).

    That's great to hear!

The saddest part of this whole experiment is the price to put 13 gals in the tank.

So, was the air running or not? It's way to hot in my neck of the woods to try this type of experiment without the air conditioning this time of year.
    "Just look at those wheels!"

It was late and I didn't feel like driving out of my way to a Chevron that is much cheaper than Shell.

And yes the air was running the entire time. It's the same down here as well, I almost never turn it off.

    thats awesome!
I drive local streets primarily and I average about 25mpg which is on track with what they say. I also don't drive like a maniac, most of the time...

Technoblue, how long does it take for the computer to get to around 30 to 32mpg (HWY)?

The most that I have driven is around 14 miles, and the best consumption I have got is around 26 mpg at 65-70 mph. AC ON.

508 miles to a tank!!! This is what happens at the Puebla plant when employees don't follow VW quality guide lines.

Even if I pushed my NB half the time, it will never achieve 508 miles / tank. And it's a 1.8T motor.

Nice! I got just over 450 on a tank a few times in my turbo. It gets much better mileage than the 2.5 I had in my Golf before this.
