Thanks for the heads up! I can't make either the NorCal (Sacramento) or SoCal event sadly but for those interested, here's the generic link:

Looks like they've been going around already ...

"Will the FR-S I drive at the event be an Automatic or Manual? The FR-S on tour will be 6-speed automatic transmission versions. We realize that FR-S enthusiasts may naturally prefer to drive the manual version - however, due to logistics, product availability, and insurance concerns, we can only offer the automatic version in our Ride and Drive format. We are confident the paddle-shift equipped automatics will still allow you to experience the precise performance and engineering of the Scion FR-S. Should you wish to experience a 6-spd manual after your FR-S First Ride experience, we encourage you to contact your local Scion dealership."

I've actually really wanted to drive the automatic, as I hear it's really good.

A friend of mine was lapping within 1sec of the manual at a track day. Pretty badass.

while that may be true, I know plenty of 16 year olds that will drive into crubs and fents if left to their own devices.

i have a sneaking suspicion the age limit has to do with their liability insurance.

edit: knew.... I don't think I know any 16 year olds that actually drive....

I went on Saturday. There was an autocross course about a minute long. We all got multiple runs.

I was really excited for this car. After driving it, not so much.

The steering is really light without much feedback. It might just have been the auto trans, but the engine felt a little weak to me, even compared to a Honda K20. I even prefer Mazda's 2.0 in the Miata to this engine.

Body control is good overall, but you can feel the front bias and the car's natural state is mild understeer. the S2000 feels way more neutral.

They showed us the noise pipe (gimmicky) and gave us free FR-S hats! Good times.

did you shift before the powerband or something? It's got a better power curve than both a k20 and the miata's engine... Might not have as much bottom end torque though..

    Automatic trans? What's the point?

I was already basically head over heels for this car before I drove one, and driving one for me only confirmed that, but the auto was even way better than I thought. In manual mode it shifts like a DSG. Just don't do like I did and try driving it hard in full-auto mode, it doesn't like that.

All the test cars were on Yokohama S Drive tires with TRD exhaust. I don't know if the TRD exhaust really makes a difference.
