I'm assuming this will be for the most basic European model with a 1.2 3 or 4 cylinder engine. Assuming the weight savings translate across the range a base US model golf should come in at around 2700 lbs which would be really nice if power levels remain the same.

carscoop is wrong, no modern car can weigh 2,315 pounds and still meet euro ncap regulation, let alone score high mark

Um, the dumb only got four stars...under the older, less intensive crash-test system:

But the Toyota/Scion iQ has gotten five stars under the new system, as has the VW Up!, and a bunch of superminis from Toyota, Kia, Hyundai, Honda and Chevrolet:

How's it go again? Hater's gonna hate...
My loaded Mk6 TDI (heavy engine) is 2900-3000lbs (it's about the same as my Mk4 was). A small engine model, with less features and smarter construction, while I don't believe 2300lbs; will probably be 2500-2600lbs, conceivably. (they say a 220lbs weight reduction is in the works in the article... so we'll say 2700-2750lbs for a regular Golf you'd buy here)
One of the most profitable, largest, and most innovative car companies in the world... Immense engineering talent (the Phaeton, the Veyron, modern Lambo's and Audi's too)... I'm thinking they are in one of the best positions to engineer cars with less weight. You can leg hump the Korean's (since they're the new cool kid in town), the Japanese, or the American's all you want - but most automotive innovations happen first in the birthplace of the automobile, Germany. They are recognized leaders in all things automotive. I damn well believe it that if they say their cars will lose weight, they will lose weight. German companies put down massive R&D budgets... They are never afraid of an idea not paying for itself - it's just another lesson learned.
Their cars were considered great road cars even when their average car weighed close to the sub 2000lbs range (say the BMW 2002)... American cars at the time were tanks, and not considered as good of a drivers car.
Mid-size cars like the Passat are considered great on the road (for a mainstream car)... it is one of the lightest cars in its class (about 40lbs more then the Camry) despite having one of the longest wheelbases, roomiest back seat, largest trunk etc... it also has some of the best real-world fuel economy numbers due to its lightness.

These weight reduction numbers came straight from a press conference in Berlin today where VW gave a preview of the Golf 7 - the car is to be fully reveled on Sept 4th. So you can take those numbers to the bank.
