Thread: Question about removing crankshaft bolt

    hi i saw in you tube a trick to remove the crankshaft bolt ,the guy put a rope in the hole of the cilynder one sparkplug ( to hold. Piston),is this right? Can i damage the piston or its ok?

    Why are you trying to remove the crank bolt?

    It doesn't need to be removed to remove the crank accessory drive pully to change a timing belt although sometimes it appears that the pulley is held on by the center bolt.

    I have used the rope in the sparkplug hole trick without causing engine damage but I suppose you could fracture a piston at a ring groove or damage something else using that method. FR

    Ok thanks what i was tryingto do is to change the crankshaft oil seal

    It's a good trick for holding the valves in place to replace the valve stem seals, but I would not put that kind of pressure on the piston.

    Depending on the year, the crankshaft bolt can be held really tight, 175 fl/lbs, or have some loctite.

    It is a stretch bolt, so if you remove it, you replace it.

    Get the oil pan out, and wedge some piece of lumber in the crankshaft to prevent it from turning while you get the bolt out.

    The procedure is in the bentley.

    i wedged a screw driver inbetween the allen bolts on the pulley and used an electric impact gun.

    If you use a rope through the spark plug hole, and use that to hold the crank from spinning as you apply force to remove the crank bolts, you will not exceed the forces the piston, rod, and crank see under high speed full load operation. Not even close. Just make sure that the rope doesn't fray alot and leave material left over in the combustion chamber, otherwise it will be burned and hopefully find its way out the exhaust valve without getting caught and holding the valve part open or getting caught on the stem in the exhaust port. Even then, it would eventually burn off.

    This trick is used for holding valves from dropping in while changing guide seals with the head installed on the engine.

    I have also personally used a flat head screwdriver through the bell housing onto the flywheel ring gear to lock the engine while i removed the front crank bolt. A little shaky I know, but it worked.

    personally, i use engine oil, or water to hold the engine from turning..

    fill the cylinder (with the valves closed) with oil, and re-install spark bolt..

    works like a charm, and oh boy, does the engine smoke like a bitch when you first fire it up! lol..

    the rope trick is much cleaner, but the oil trick exerts even force on the piston crown and rings/ring lands..

    and a fairly good sized impact gun as well.. i just use my 1/2" gun..
