Yes, it's most likely the injectors. They are supposed to sound like that.

Engine tapping

So my friend recently bought a 2006 passat 2.0 turbo. He says the engine has a distinct tapping and that it almost sounds like a Diesel. Is this relatively normal? It has 102k miles on it.

the FSI engines sound loud.. should sound like a Diesel as it also uses Direct Injection like a Diesel.
Oh tell your buddy to check the cam follower.. do a search as you can get all the info from better resources than me.. but this will kill a 2.0T (cost $$$ to fix)

I had the same problem... does it only make the noise once it has warmed up? I had to replace the cam chain and tensioner.

Hmm, maybe I need to add that to my list of things to do. Is there a way to check the tensioner?

people should really specifiy that the injectors should be loud/similar to diesel injectors. not the rest of the engine/exhaust. they have an almost knocking sound.
a loud ticking from injectors=normal
knocking sound=BAD
