2004 tdi

I'm looking at a 2004 TDI and I was wondering what kind of things I should look out for? It has around 75k miles on it. I've nevered owned a Diesel let alone a V10! I've been thinking about starting a Auto Transport Business and this would be my tow vehicle. Would this be a bad vehicle to do so?

I first would get the complete service history of that V10 and if you can't I would seriously walk away from it. The mileage is not bad, but if certain things on it were not repaired yet or have gone out, you could be looking at a serious repair bill. There are certain repairs the require dropping the motor to take care of, no way around it. That cost alone is in the 2K range. If that in of it's self scares you then this may not be the vehical for you. Short list of known repairs is turbos and it is best to do them both at the same time since this is one thing that requires a motor drop. O2 sensors that can't be reached any other way other then to drop the motor. Tranny valve body which is a common repair to all of the Touaregs. The center drive shaft bearing. So knowing these few items if you still want one then by all means go buy it. The V10 if you have never driven one is a beast of a motor with over 500 ft lb of torque. You just need to be ready if other things go wrong.

They are all rated the same regardless of motor under the hood. It is more the limitation of the chassis then the motors.

It's actually NOT the chasis... It's the US spec for the hitch receiver. 7700 x .1 = 770lbs. That's the Max our class of receiver will legally handle on the Tounge. Pulling weight, with the proper torque on the bumper bolts is well into the 10,000 range.

That said, even the V6 can pull that with the granny gear engaged.

If you want to get real technical, that rating is only with the Factory hitch for after market is less. The tow rating is the same on all of them be it US or ROW. I doubt the US specs play into it totally since it does not matter where you buy it as long as it comes with the factory hitch.
