Just went and checked out the new location, the whole campground is rented out for the show weekend. The only downside I saw was the huge speedbumps in the roads throughout the campground. There is no way to go around them either, it's either fenced in or blocked on the sides.
They are not your normal semi friendly speedbumps they are the big fat round ones.
Air ride need not worry But For those of us still static were in trouble

      Any thoughts

I feel like there may be some cracked oil pans and possible body damage again this year. I don't understand why they don't think these sorts of things through know that most of us do in fact drive lowered vehicles. Maybe they have a way to remove them for the weekend? Or possibly make elongated ramps to better drive over them?

Alright, you find another property willing to host us that is large enough in OC that is absolutely perfect. Get back to me when you find it.

Being that h20 is a pretty big event, I dont see why the venders wouldnt gladly give a hand on that situation. There are plenty of way to get over the speed bumps if their notified in time

We had a perfect venue for a good number of years. But those days are gone, now the show has to find a new home that fits it as well as the casino did. That is not an easy task to complete, but like posted above, I'm sure with enough time something can be arranged to make life easier for all people involved.

i understand this may be tough but when looking for event (i do for living) you have to take in consideration of the surrounding conditions. im not going to have a birthday party in the front lawn if the front lawn is in front of a highway.

the speed bumps are a HUGE factor. i understand space. thats a big one... but i think 90% of the cars in the show with be low. low enough that they hit speed bumps in town.

im just saying id be willing to make some calls and help because im not breaking an oil pan just to show my car. sorry

      fyi - im static

This is definitely something worth looking into for Jay and the H2O crew since the majority of cars that show up would probably get beached/break something if these speed bumps are as big as the OP says

These speedbumps are the old asphalt kind that are round and just molded into of the pavement. Probably a good 4-5 inches tall or possibly bigger. I will go out there tomorrow and measure unless someone local wants to beat me too it.

I may go take another look. FWIW, last year when working on VAGWerks, when it looked like Jay was done we got the place as a just-in-case, and we had work-arounds for the speedbumps, there's fixes for the issue, and the campground was willing to work with us just as I'm sure they will with Jay.

I hope this is the case cause as I originally posted, the speedbumps seem to be the only huge issue.

other than the speed bumps this place looks amazing. could someone get access to have the fences taken out in those spots and wood in place over the grass?

Our plan had been to remove some fencing, not a lot, but a bit. The ground is solid and pretty well elevated/drained, so you won't see a quagmire like the school.

Removing the fence would be a nice solution, I just hope everything falls into place nicely so it can be a great show

Ah, the power of searching the internet...

Assuming this is the one you speak of, just drive around it in the grass.

Thata the idea put all the roads have fence on either side. So they need to come up with a venue friendly solution.

Some 2x12's, some 4x8 3/4" plywood and problem solved.
Scuba If I got in a cab and Esher was driving, I'd get right out. Then I'd ponder how drunk I was that I entered the rear of a 2dr rabbit and thought it was a cab.

So let me get this right; you assist Jay with organizing this event and when someone asks/addresses a legitimate concern regarding something that could potentially damage cars, you'd rather bitch at them suggesting they find a better location rather than address the issue with a, "hey guys, we're aware of the speedbumps and we'll have something in place"

      Way to represent H20

He's not concerned about the location, just the hazards within.

Is probably more the bashing that the organizers get when the location is announced. Isht gets old when everyone has issues with everything. I'm sure they know about them, I'm sure theyre addressing the issue, I'm sure it'll be sorted out. People will still show up and complain anyway. That's just how people are, you can't please everyone.

You're obviously confused, and you didn't get anything right. I don't work for Jay, nor have I in the past. Last year I worked on a possible competing show as a matter of fact, had he failed to come through. And I quickly understood why he's always late with dates and why the job is damned near impossible. No one down there wants us there (fact). Try having a meeting with elected officials or appointed ones, or with property owners who've seen us trash their neighbor's places of business. They're pretty much unwilling to listen or compromise. Then, once you find a property that will work (Ocean Downs, the Catholic school, and this campground are the only ones large enough within twenty-five miles, period), try talking to ownership. I got escorted out of the Downs for even suggesting VWs on their property, and it took me bugging the campground for two weeks to even begin negotiation. A cornfield won't work.

Now, this year, I'm assisting Shoup in an unofficial capacity, because I'm familiar with the property, I'm local, and I have a passion for the event, and because, frankly, everyone loves going to the show, but few want to help make sure it happens. I'm not getting paid, and I'm sure I'll catch Hell at the show from people because a very vocal portion of our community lacks respect. I hadn't even met Shoup as of last year, but I saw him walking around the school with a trash bag because of the mess people made. I went up to him and immediately helped pick up garbage. And when I did that I had three people look me in the eye and then drop their garbage on the ground. It's disgusting and sad.

Knowing that, if I owned a property I would not welcome my fellow VW owners onto it. So, if the biggest issue is one speed bump I'm sure there's a way around it, especially given what I posted above about the owner being willing to work with us in the past on that. Most of these cars are driven often, and encounter speed bumps. Owners know ways around the issue, and H2Oi will figure something out as well I'm sure. When I'm there in the next couple weeks it'll be much more clear what needs to be done, but it should be obvious that it will be addressed by the organizer of a show that will have more than eighty percent of participating cars lowered.

Edit: And my initial post was in response to "I don't know why they don't think these things through." Obviously it is a concern, but the first concern is finding a spot that will accept us, then one large enough, then one close enough to OC, then one that will allow easy ingress and egress of vehicles, then one that isn't marsh, then one that is speed bump free. That concern is well down the list. As the poster I was addressing said, beggars cannot be choosers, and at this point, we are in fact the beggars.

      Well said, 71camaro.

It always amazes me when these threads pop up...every year. Tactical driving and a heads up are enough, but as everyone else said...I'm sure Jay and other's are addressing the problem.

And, wtf with the littering? I still can not wrap my head around people that just drop garbage where they stand.

Removing the fence would work granted that the grass to the side is flat and won't be mud haha. As others have stated, this could be easily fixed with some wood. Build up some long ramps on each side instead, and make sure the bump is clearly marked so people will be careful (you'd be surprised)

As for the trash issue that was mentioned before, this disgusts me. People need to have some respect for the venue and show organizers. Not that hard to throw your trash into a trash can, or even a shopping bag and throw it out later.

Anyways, hoping this gets sorted out easily. Looking forward to the show.

Lots and lots of garbage cans are the key. People are lazy and if they have to walk more than 10' to a can on the ground it goes. So either get a bazillion cans or hand out garbage bags to everyone that enters the gates. At least trash will be in a bag and easier to pick up.
