Anyone else have problems with the door hinges going dry? Actually, just the drivers door. Hate that creaking sound. I have to hit it with lithium grease every two months. Never had a car need it that frequently before.

Don't spray WD-40 on a hinge only grease! WD-40 attracts dirt and other things. Its good against rust but otherwise not on hinges. http://lifehacker.com/5891936/when-s...-not-use-wd+40

I use this, works great and lasts a long time and I'm not seeing any side effects:

Don't use the doors. Keep the windows down and get in and out Dukes of Hazzard style.
you use the driver's door most often, so...naturally, it starts squeaking first.
Wurth HHS 2000 (or HHS-HK) is a get penetrating lube that sets up as a thick grease.
BMW Dealerships use this expensive stuff...which was where I bought a can of...

Happens to mine a lot. I've been using my mini grease gun with Pedro's or Phil Wood waterproof bicycle grease (lithium based) on it. Stuff works great and doesn't attract or hold dirt. I'm getting at least a season out of it and I looked at the service interval (I think). I seem to recall that VW recommends greasing the check straps every year or every major service interval. Either way it takes me all of 60 seconds to grease them and then they're good for a while.

I actually did use wd40... I knew it attracted dirt, but I try to keep the car clean. This was maybe 6 months ago, and it has been perfect ever since. I don't think dirt will typically find its way into the hinges. I know for a fact I haven't had to clean the hinges or anything like that due to dirt. Personally, I try to avoid grease whenever possible; I'm the type of guy that forgets he has some on his hand and then touches everything, and it's just downhill from there
