Greetings all! First time posting in the regional board (didn't know it existed until this morning!).

The thought of installing my H&R cup kit I bought on the classifieds scares me to death and the prices I'm getting back from general shops and VAG specific shops is out of my price range at the moment so I was wondering if anyone does this on the side, obviously payment would be involved in monetary funds, food, beer, etc. and my generous help for learning.

I don't have any of the tools required (go figure right), but can get the replacement axel bolts if necessary from the dealer or online.

Now sure how long the install would take, but if you can let me know that, scheduling is tight at the moment so that may play into things a little bit.

What do you consider expensive? If all of the parts are there, most indy shops will charge under $200 to do it right, from my experience. There's a resources thread at the top of the page.

I've sent out emails to some of the shops in the resources as well, but I figured I'd throw this out there for anyone with a MKV or A3 that might have done this. I have all the parts in hand, a few shops quoted me $800 for the work and just a general brake/suspension/etc. shop that doesn't specialize in Euro cars said $400 so $200 is definitely in my price range as the tools themselves I've priced to be about $80-$100 to DIY.

I got my coils installed for $280 from a local Indy shop. They did a horrible job and I have since removed them (myself) and sold them. Be sure wherever you go that they have extensive experience on late model VW suspension, which my guy obviously did not.

Just got another quote back for $500 for install and alignment. Maybe its best to go at it myself I'll give Exklusiv a call and see, don't mind the drive if its quality work and reasonably priced.

You don't need an alignment when swapping struts.

The rear is IRS and the front has a "drop and bolt in" set up.

Alignments are cheap - tires aren't

It's worth it to have it checked to make sure the drop doesnt add any toe, which is what kills tires the fastest.

Also, as I mention in there, I'm getting new tires and wheels sometime between the 21st and 23rd, if I can mesh up this install a few days before those come in I'll be having an alignment done with the new stuff goes on

I'll wait for your reply to my email and hopefully we can set up an appt.

It kind of floored me because I called a few Brake-Master-Lube-Econo-We-Service-Cars places and they only quoted about $400 for everything, not that I'd trust a jack-of-all-trades place to a Euro car (although I'm sure they do good work), it just seemed like everyone was all over the place on price.

    side note...
front strut replacement on said A3 is 2.80/hr
    rear strut replacement is 1.80/hr
    does not include alignment

    so if we do math:
    4.60hr/$800.00=173.91/hr.
derek your dumb you can charge 150/hr and still make money
    did they use this?

It also says It takes 2 hours for an axle on a rabbit. (mk5) it takes me 30 mins.

I dd springs and struts ona mk5 in 2 hours.

Just because the book says it takes that long doesn't mean it does.

When I ran my shop I would charge people a little under book. In all reality if you know the car/job make the honest money and don't rip them off.

I wanna see this while your doing mine. Just to make sure there's the proper amount of unicorn piss and rainbow dust. Not as worried about the moisturizer cream.

My God the price quotes are freaking high. Is th a3 suspension actually hard? I know on my mk3 I can do both fronts in under an hour and the rear in a bit less if I have the interior trim out. Alignment is like $60 after that but I have yet to do that and still have good tirewear strings work very well for aligning.

I pretty sure he's referring to Audi A3 not VW a3 chassis. For $800 you better get a complimentary handy and a ZJ. I'd take it to the pros like the dealership and no shade tree mechanic. Dealerships always know what they're doing.
