Thread: Newbie jetta question

  1. 08-30-2012 02:25 PM #1
    Hello all!

Somewhat of a newbie here. Have owned a 83 GTI and an 06 Jetta in the past and haven’t had the best of luck. I am looking at a 96 Jetta GL for my new daily beater (drive 80+ miles a day). Currently I have a 95 civic, salvage title, loose and rough. She’s beat and I’m beat from driving her. Anyway, I’m really thinking hard about this Jetti. 131K miles and very clean. I’m hoping you guys can ease my mind and help me decide on this purchase. Are there any quirks about these cars that I need to know about? Time belt? After seeing the low on 15’s, that is def the route i'll go soon.

Before I get my arse handed to me, I know about the search function I just need some solid advice quick cuz if this is a deal (1500), I don’t want to miss out.

Rust will kill a 2.0 mkIII well before anything else if it is maintained and not beaten on too hard. I would give it a good look over for rust: strut towers, gas door area, rocker panels, floor/underside. Any way to get pics up of the car in question?

It has new rockers on it. I'll check out the towers, gas door, etc...

If it's a clean car you should be able to resell that for twice what your paying (it's worth at least 2500 if it's clean). 2.0 5 spd in anything is super easy to deal with. I have one over 200k and I have seen several over 300k.
Aaron- When you have to notch your frame so you can set your car ALL THE WAY on the ground, you need to seriously evaluate your priorities.
