Thread: oil burning opinions

  1. 08-30-2012 03:49 PM #1
bought a 2001 avh to use as a replacement for a grenaded 2l. previous owner went to 1.8t swap. had 105k miles on it. said it ran great but used some oil. engine has been sitting awhile .

read dozens of oilburning threads on 2.0ls, aeg rings upside down etc. seems oil consumption could be a normal issue or ?

did a cold compression test, dry as it had been sitting awhile. got 175-185-185-180, open throttle. 5 cranks.

ok that seems within spec. to me. possible valve seals or do i need to do a leak-down to rule out rings for sure? don't want to rebuild if it doesn't really need it. don't have a leak-down tool but would have to source one if it's essential for diagnosis

    thoughts?

Tough call without a running engine to diagnose. A leak-down test finds where compression is escaping, it won't help determine if valve seals are bad, and your compression numbers indicate a healthy engine, no reason for a leak-down test.

How much was this burning? General rule of thumb, most manufacturers consider 1qt/1000 miles acceptable. Honestly, I'd just put it in the car and run it.
