The hatch was closing automatically, and half-way through the cycle, I changed my mind about closing it, and pushed up on the hatch to reverse the motor (only very gently), and the chain part of the mechanism broke, rendering the auto-opener useless. This must be a common problem, as another Routan was in for the same problem, and the dealer had the mechnism in stock. So it was a quick repair under warranty. So.....if you decide to reverse the closing hatch halfway through the cycle, use the anti-pinch switches located on the body by the hatch glass instead of pushing on the hatch.
