I spend most of my time in the MK4 forums and didn't know there was a photography subforum! So for those that don't know me, I'm GoodBoy from Kansas City and you can find my work here: http://www.imagoodboy.com
Hope you enjoy the short, below you'll find the details
This is a project that I've been hard at work on at VML with some other folks on my team for TEDxKC (and independent TED event). We had creative freedom with the only stipulation being that it had to be focused on Kansas City and the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, since that's where the event was being held. We thought that it would be awesome to capture Kansas City like it hadn't been captured before; motion timelapse. Our programming whizz, Cody Beltram, fabbed up our dolly with a stepper motor that could push specific distances over specific amounts of time. The dolly travels on good 'ole 1/4" PVC pipe that was easily bendable while providing a very smooth and reliable moving surface; as opposed to concrete, grass, rock, etc.
The biggest challenge during the project was shooting timelapse during the hottest period of time since 1895...a midwest drought. I waited for hours, days and weeks for the right skies, clouds were very scarce and evaporated as fast as they appeared. Lots of footage was tossed out due to zero cloud movement, but we used this "down-time" to work on our motorized dolly on location across the city.
For the post, I used Camera Raw 7.1 and LRTimelapse, which was a lifesaver/timesaver on many occasions. I color corrected the raw's to be flat so I could do final correction/grading in After Effects and Premiere.
I'll do my best to list the gear I used:
- custom dolly w/stepper motor on PVC pipe
- Phillip Bloom edition Kessler Crane Pocket Dolly w/Basic Controller and 200 series motor
- Kessler Crane 8' KC Lite Crane
- Canon 5D MKIII
- Canon 5D MKII
- Canon 60D
- Canon 16-35 L 2.8
- Canon 24-70 L 2.8
- Canon 24-105 L 4.0 IS
- Canon 70-200 L 2.8 IS
- Canon 50 1.8
- Canon 85 1.8
- Manfrotto sticks and heads
- Intervalometers
- blood, sweat and tears
I had an amazing time shooting this and you all can expect much more where this came from. I also plan on uploading a longer edit to include more of the timelapses showcased in this piece, so stay tuned! If you have any questions about the pre, during or post of this project, please feel free to drop me a line!
