Thread: Need $12k "SmallUV" ideas

  1. 08-31-2012 11:28 AM #1
Co-worker is considering getting rid of her car after 250k miles. Has $12k for a small, economical, automatic, wagonish kind of car. She commutes about 60 miles p/day in so-cals crappy traffic. New or used (<50k m) doesnt matter.

I was thinking Honda Fit user or new/used versa. Used >2006 Rav4 but they seem to be holding there value ($14k).

That was my first thought. I don't see any need to go out and get a RAV4 or CRV when the Fit is all you really need in this case.

60 miles a day...you'll want the best fuel economy...the fit makes a lot of sense. the new chevy sonic is great, but a bit above budget.
    Regarding DD'ing a tuned Evo:

Mazda2s run about 12k new. Probably manuals but I'm sure she could swing a grand for auto.

$12K for a Fit under 50k miles will be tough.
There are no old Porsches - just new owners.

Is A/C performance a concern in SoCal? I found that the Fit/Civic A/C's are very weak.

Fiesta would be a good option but you probably can't get one for 12k yet -- more like 14.

I wouldn't have thought so either, but I just checked AutoTrader and there are a surprising number of '11 hatches with ~30K miles for $12-13K (so after negotiation, you could probably be at $12K or under)
    Put it in H!

We were comparing cost of ownership (monthly payments + gas) and thinking that it may be best to pay a little more a month and get a new Fit vs going for a used car.

She's not worried about performance (A/C).

Looks like an auto Mazda2 is about $15k.
Id argue the Fit is more car then a Mazda2 for $15k.

Doesn't look like they are running the special anymore but a couple months ago new Mazda2s were listed in the 12s. I believe the MSRP was in the 14s though.
