I'm running into that phenomenon with the old Mercedes diesel folks these days. I looked at one a few weeks back as a possible quick fix and flip project. Looked promising from the ad. When I got there, I found out it belonged to some female college student who bought it (and way overpaid), thinking it would be a good, cheap, reliable car.

The odometer read 430,000 miles (she swore it was only 130,000) and the floors and rocker panels were rusted as badly as I'd ever seen. Also, when I started it, I could smell burning vegetable oil (it was in the factory diesel tank, with no conversion system visible)

She wanted $900 and said her landlord told her the car needed to go in 24 hours. I offered $100 and intended to part it out. I left, but later emailed upping my offer to $200. Solid engine and interior or not, this was a scrap car. I got an email reply from her father huffing and puffing about how he knew how much the car was worth and that I was trying to take advantage of his daughter.

I deleted it. I don't know what she got for that car, but I hope the next owner paid scrap price or less.

Simply getting angry at me accomplishes nothing. Maybe I lowballed a little too hard, but the ad said nothing about any of the car's major problems. Based on the condition, the asking price was stratospheric.

Case in point is a car I have that was recently traded in that still runs great with cold A/C......it has a slipping trans (Subaru auto transmissions from that era are only good to @ that mileage) but those old 2.2L engines will absolutely run forever with regular oil changes and maint.

Although it's not much to look at it's all there...

I could think of much worse road trip vehicles in which to drive x-country. I'd probably upgrade the stereo first, though, and of course have it checked out by a Subaru shop. But then? Two lane blacktop all the way, baby.

I would be VERY worried about the rear suspension carrier based on that amount of rust. But, they do run and run and run. I'm trying to sell a much cleaner '93 Impreza with 326,000 miles right now.

I doubt that car would be worth $900 to anyone wanting to part it out. $500 I could see. But I, personally wouldn't have gone more than $300 or $400. I've seen a lot of these cars, and I've never seen one rustier. I don't have the time or space for a full part-out. It's not as much the disassembly, but the marketing, sales, and shipping of the parts I couldn't keep up with.

Yeah the asking price is a bit high but it is a PNW car so it should be pretty much rust free!

I have bought a couple Legacys of that gen and I didn't pay over $600 for either one.
I just wanted them for the engine and wiring harness then sold off the seats and transmission then I scrapped them and got my money back.

The 22 year old tan ****box posted above for $4000 is clear evidence thereof. The dealer selling that Outback H6 probably paid $1000 less for it at auction in NJ...just sayin'. That's an $8000 car here, easy.
