Thread: VWVORTEX home page locks up

  1. 09-01-2012 10:45 AM #1
Wondering if anyone else is having this issue. When I land on the home page @ vwvortex.com, my computer will freeze up for 20 - 30 seconds. This is from 3 different computers however my iPad is fine. It started happening this week. Curious if any changes were made?

Same issues. It would appear Vortex has been on the fritz for a large portion of the day so far

Been dealing with this for several weeks, however it happens when I hit the forums. I don't ever go to the homepage, so perhaps it is just hitting the vwvortex.com URL and any associated subdomains (such as forum.vwvortex.com)

Computer just freezes completely and then after 10 seconds or so lets me continue. Only happens on this site, happens on several different computers with different browsers and from different locations. Really annoying.
Where are we going and why am I in this handbasket?

Happened this morning. Typically only happens once per day, which is even weirder.

I've had this problem for 1-2 weeks now. At first, it is unresponsive, then seems to reload and it's OK. It's the same every time a page changes....freeze....wait.....reload....OK.
    What's up with that ???

This has been happening long before any issues this weekend.

It typically happens as the Google Typekit stuff is displayed as loading. Seems the problem may be there. I really haven't been interested in figuring out if it is a client issue or a server issue because it is so rare, but that's where I see the problem happen for what it's worth.

Yep. Only happens on this site too. Really odd.

I've sort of learned to deal with it, but I do wonder what is causing the issue.

    Happens with either on mine.

It seems to be as something starts to load, it just hangs. Then finally goes.

Is this happening when you are browsing vwvortex.com, or are you in an article and it hangs? I am using IE9 and I'm having no issues loading any of the pages.

For me, it happens the moment I try to connect to the site.

I usually come straight into the forums and it will hang for 10 seconds or so. Complete freeze, can't do anything. Then it eventually pops up.

It only happens maybe once per day, only on this site and things work fine once it connects.

Since I'm too lazy to bookmark anything, I usually just type vwvortex into google and hit the vwvortex.com or forum link results. The site loads and starts to open, and then freezes up. Happens in IE and FF.

So you are having an issue when you come directly to the forums, or to the home page? Or both?

I rarely, if ever, hit the homepage first, so I wouldn't be able to answer that. I want to say it has happened, but I can only tell you for sure that it happens when entering directly into the forums as that is what I see most often.

This happens every day for me, on Chrome. I have a bookmark for TCL, Off topic, Mk2 and New England forums off vwvortex.com.

Also happens every day for me on Chrome (I go straight to the forums with a bookmark). I think it's generally as the header is loading (NEWS | ARTICLES | GALLERIES | MARKETPLACE | COMMUNITY FORUMS). The fonts on that section also look like crap, like something is rendered wrong.

    Internet Explorer 9 and Firefox:

Have you disabled font downloading in Chrome? We just tested it and they both look the same for us.

    Interesting....

I just made this change in FF, so I'll let you know tomorrow how it works. That's where it normally seemed to hang.

waiting for google-analytics.com is what was at the bottom of Chrome this time. It froze everything up for a good minute.

We upgraded our server last week and the site has been super fast for me ever since then. The full page loads fully within 5 seconds for me.

We can't control the latency with the google analytics, but it shouldn't consistently be a problem.

Hmmm .... last week is about when my submit reply button became painfully slow periodically.

Things have been pretty smooth today.

Seems to have worked at least this morning. No freeze.

I had narrowed down my issue to moving between the office and working from home. Once home, first time opening froze everything up.

I had chalked it up to a possible DNS issue on my end while changing between networks, but it didn't happen today. *knock on wood*

I never had an issue with the fonts. They did show up differently in IE and FF until I made that change.

So this is the third Dell laptop that has done this. When I go to VWVortex for the first time the entire machine hangs - mouse won't move, screen won't update. Nothing. It does that for about 20 to 30 seconds and then returns to normally loading the page.

    Dell Latitude E5410
    Dell Latitude E5530
    Dell Latitude D630

My home machine doesn't stall like this. My Macbook Air doesn't stall like this. But for some reason those machines all choke (and nearly die) loading VWVortex the first time after. It also seems to appear most frequently when docked to a port replicator.

I use Chrome. I don't see a place to disable Font Downloading. A Google search only shows a debugging shell and a "regression" developers page.

    Weird, right?
