So ive been searching for a while now and in the process of looking for a Rabbit on craigslist when i came across this gem:
shes a 1980. runs and drives. needs some work but overall very solid. did some cleaning today and heres where im at so far:
few things that i know that i need right off the bat are tires, all new motor mounts, and a sunroof because it is missing.
I was doing a little research and i saw somewhere that some cars have the same sunroof as mine and i know they arent the easiest things to find so i would like to know what sunroofs fit this car and if anyone has one. I come from the mk3 world so there is a lot that i do not know about these cars but it wont be long before i become very familiar. Any tips or helpful hints are always appreciated.![]()

Nice find...look in the classifieds for CJMiller (I thinks that his username). He is parting out a car I used to own decades ago and it had a factory sunroof.
I really like the way those tarantula wheels (the three you have on there) look on the MK1. Much better than the one stock alloy you have...so get another tarantula wheel as they are not hard to find (came on MK2 Sciroccos and some Cabbies).
#5
will definitely get on that. i actually have the other wheel. the one stock one is the spare. one of the tires blew out and the previous owner put the spare on and never got a new tire for the other wheel.

Nice score! As others have said, that green interior is unobtanium, as in you're likely the only Mk1 owner on here with one. AFAIK, the green interior was only offered outside the US, Canada being the closest to us to have it. Can't find it in any US brochures. My dad's 1980 Mk1 had it, except his had cloth seats (light green cloth with dark green stripes). When I first mentioned it years ago on here, people thought I was nuts and insisted that it was custom/redone. Then a couple guys popped up and attested that they do indeed exist.
Been after a green interior for ages! Take good care of it.![]()

Wow. I had no idea it was that uncommon. You guys are making me love this thing more and more. I wish they didn't paint over the original green color. Under the back seat its still green and it looks like an awesome color.

Great Car!! Sweet interior and the wheels look good on it the way it sits. I wouldn't change much about the appearance right off the bat if it were me. I'd just enjoy it the way it is for a while .Learn more and get to know it and then decide what to change later.
I've had good luck with good quality and pricing if you are looking for value oriented tires like a General or Kumho this place you might check out:

That's exactly what I am going to do for now. I'm going to get everything under the hood in order and make sure the suspension is all good and just drive it for a while until I know exactly what I want to do. I'm already thinking of bringing it back to the original green color in the future.

Yup, the original color was Colibri Green. Wonder what the "stripe" was on the original paint. If it were just pinstriping or some cool large 80's-esque decal.
FWIW, here's my dad's 1980 Colibri Green Scirocco. It's one of my favorite colors.

This seems like it would definitely be worth starting a savings plan to repaint the car the original color because it looks so good that color!

Wow, green interior. As others have attested, it was very rare. (And I don't think it was just a Canadian thing.) My first Mk 1 (parts car - rear axle had rotted off) had the green w/ green cloth interior in it - I saved 3 of the 4 side panels (oh if I had only known) and gave them to Nataku some time ago.
Nice find, keep us updated. And check the rockers / suspension points for rot - these cars disentegrated in salt and I'm guessing by the rust poking through you may have some to deal with.
#24
Rockers floor boards and shock towers actually are clean. It was the first thing I looked at when we went to look at it as mk3s have the exact same trouble spots

Nice find, nice score!! Just a couple of quick comments:
I'd suggest posting a WTB ("Want To Buy") ad both here in the Vortex Scirocco classifieds, and also on TheSamba (another good source for VW stuff).
Let the ads run a few weeks, but if that fails... well hell, I have a factory sunroof panel that I picked up a while back; I was thinking I was going to acquire a fac/sunrf'd car but it didn't happen. Not that time anyway. But maybe in the future, which is why I've been holding on to the panel.
So... if you absolutely cannot find the sunroof panel elsewhere shoot me a PM, I'll set you up; be aware it won't be cheap (but won't be rudely expensive, either). These are getting hard to find. IIRC the panel is in fairly good shape, but I haven't actually looked at it in while; it's stashed in a box in my shop.
Eh... if needed we can sort it out, a good sunroof panel will be an improvement over the "optional extra air vent" that you have now.
Just FYI, I once put tarantulas on a '77 Scir; everything was fine until I installed new brake pads, the inside diameter (clearance to brake caliper) is very slightly less in the tarantula rims than on the stock bottlecap alloys, and the rims scraped on the calipers. On an '80 you might have no problem, the later calipers are different I think; not quite so large so they don't interfere with the rim. But I'd suggest you keep it in mind, and check carefully when you change FR pads to be sure there's clearance.
Again, very nice car; looking forward to seeing your progress. LMK about the sunroof panel; I really don't want to give it up, but I don't have a current need for it, you do.

Thank you very much. I have already posted a WTB thread and shot a couple pm's to some people. No responses yet but I'm praying. I will definitely let you know if I can not find one. Actually have a ghetto sunroof panel right now. Guy I got it from made it out of this rubbery plastic material. Would be ok for light rain and to wash the car but for heavy rain it's for no chance. Definitely won't stay on while driving either.

So I have a question for you guys. I'm not sure if you can see the gas cap on the car. The guy I got it from said it was from a rabbit. Its a locking gas cap. If the car is running for a little bit and you open the gas cap after turning it off, you here pressure releasing like your opening a bottle of soda. Does this mean the cap is not vented or it is and it is not venting properly? Anyone have any idea?

And also, for those of you who run 13" wheels, where to you get tires from? Can't seem to find a place that can actually get 13" tires.

Judging from the photos you have a Napa sold vented locking cap which normally hisses like you described when removing it after running the car or at the gas pump when refilling and that is normal.
