OK, so I thought I'd check my transmission fluid levels by taking out the check plug -- nothing comes out, it needs fluid, a little comes out and it's just right, a lot comes out and it's overfilled. I ran into a slight snag, however, when I stripped the plug. Seems that plug is in there nice and snug. I'm having similar issues with my drain plug. Neither of them want to come out!

    Any ideas/suggestions?

UPDATE: I sprayed quite a bit of WD-40 "BluTorch" rust penetrator around the check plug, let it set for a while, and then epoxy puttied a 5mm allen bit (not a wrench but a bit) into the plug. I don't think this will work -- the epoxy putty will break first -- but it's worth a go.

I got the smaller check plug out by taking that 5mm allen bit (epoxy putty removed), soldering a bit of silver solder around it, hammering it into the plug, and using a socket wrench to unscrew it. The fluid that came out definitely needs to be replaced. I'll post a photo of the fluid later. Now the problem is getting the drain plug out. It, too, is stuck.

A bigger wrench (stepped up from a 1/4" drive with 1/4"-3/8" and then a 3/8"-1/2" adapter to a 3/8" drive with the one 3/8"-1/2" adapter) with a slightly longer handle got that plug unstuck. I've heard spark plug anti-seize around the threads will prevent it from sticking in the future.

As a precaution, I'm thinking about replacing the plugs, especially the stripped drain plug. Where's the best place to find those? Local parts places (AutoZone, Advance, etc.) apparently don't have them in-stock or even special order. Time to scour the internet!

EDIT: ECS has the larger of the two -- Magnetic Transmission Drain Plug (24x1.5) and Drain & Fill Plug (24x1.5) -- but not the 5mm allen plug. Does anyone know of other sources?

Does anyone know the part number, know a source (all I can find are replacement drain plugs), or know what size the check plug is on the 09a/JF506E transmission?

if you get lucky and find one in your local salvage yard... otherwise its probably gonna be easiest to order one from the dealer.

UPDATE: I just called Hiley Audi/VW in Huntsville and get this... They want $29.16 for one and they'll have to order it.

$29 for what basically amounts to a 50 cent bolt that I can probably get from Lowe's?!!?

According to Jay at ECS Tuning, this is what I'm looking for - VW part #N90414203, metric 10mm x 1.0. Apparently, it's also the drain plug for 01M transmissions.

UPDATE: Confirmed! The new plug arrived yesterday and it screwed right in place of the old one, so if anyone ever strips their 09A check/inspection/service/level plug (or whatever term you choose to use), IDParts can have one at your door for $2.80 + shipping.
