2009 JSW 2.0t SEL Mods and Retrofit

My 2009 JSW is in need of a few upgrades to equipment that's become available on later models, in other markets, or both. Much will need recoding via VCDS. Upgrades and changes include:

Retrofit RNS-315
Install back-up camera using Maloosheck's harness
Highline CECM
Front foglights wired to the new CECM
Enable rear fog light (Pin C12 to Pin B4)
Euroswitch

I did much of this work to a MK VI JSW, but, when it comes to electronics, the MK V is a very different beast.

I'd like to do all of the work at once and have made some progress. I've run the wiring for the back-up camera, but I have not yet connected the three leads I need to power up the camera. These include adding a fused tap to the fusebox position 16, a simple ground, and a jump off of the passenger-side back-up light. (I was told to tap C-1, because C12 will not work when the CECM gets recoded to accommodate a rear fog light on the driver's side.)

At the moment, the biggest issue I've got is with the CAN BUS not seeing the RNS-315. The -315 is hooked up to the stock wiring harness that originally supported a Premium 7 radio. I have not changed any of the pins on the radio harness. I did remove the compass module and I did (using VCDS) disable position sensing.

The -315 seems to be working normally. It recognizes the iPod as a CD changer, which I'll have to look into as "normal" or not. Navigation, FM, and AM are working as expected. I did not re-route the Sirius antenna, as I don't subscribe to the service. I did electrically unplug the Sirius receiver and I did disable (via VCDS) the digital radio function.

I did enable navigation using VCDS. But VCDS does not seem able to find and control the RNS-315 in any way. I'd like to fix this as I hope to activate the BT module and the back-up camera functions in the -315.

So my burning question for the moment... How can I get VCDS to connect to the RNS-315? I sure hope I don't need a new CAN BUS gateway...

RNS 315 is a radio which working with BAP. Your CAN gateway 530 R is not the lates one, so need to be replace for for any 7N0 compatibile with your car. If you will focun on RNS 310 - your CAN gateway might wotk correct.

And you can of course forget to see any info from your RNS 315 on the cluster (radio station, navi etc) - This cluster not support BAP protocol.

If I have to get a new CAN BUS gateway, I will. I've seen a few posts hinting that gateways can be re-flashed, but I'm not sure.

I think I will get some MFD functionality even if the MFSW doesn't do much for me.

Anybody got a good CAN BUS part number for me to start chasing?

gives me reason to think that my CAN-Bus controller is OK. It's not on the list/table of "bad" controllers and Ross-Tech says "check the following List if your Gateway is considered NOT compatible - all part numbers NOT listed here can be considered compatible.."

Could be something related to the control module not being coded, but that's going to require some help...

Because there are some similarities, some of the RNS-510 information still has use. My understanding of the "bad" controller list is that the "bad" controllers have issues with BAP nav systems and that it's relevant to both the -315 and the -510.

I've been reading over the MK V and MK VI tweaks on this forum, but have come up dry so far. One promising notion was that the WSC might not be good, but these are not zeroed out and seem OK. I also have the earliest scan of the car...how it was when I got it...available if that's of any use.

At first glance two modules appear to be causing the incorrectly coded fault and I believe you should:

0F-Digital Radio -- Status: Not registered 0011
56-Radio -- Status: Not registered 0001

1) Remove/unplug the 0F module so it is not online and communicating. Satellite radio functions are an internal function of the RNS-510 -and- RNS-315 units sold in the US/Canadian (NAR) market so that unit will cause conflicts.

Additionally, the Compass using address word 1C-Position Sensing is not used. 77-Telephone is also an internal function of some later production RNS-315 units. You have already resolved the 1C issue however I believe the 01303 - Telephone Transceiver (R36) - No Signal/Communication fault is due to the radio itself and this may be a conflict because I do not believe the RoW RNS-310 uses this scheme.


2) Add the 56-Radio to the [Installation List] to resolve the Not registered status.


3) This 19-CAN Gateway should have a flash in the NAR market. The TSB I have is outdated however you can provide the dealer with SVM code 328C and mention 2025685 -or- 2022585 for search criteria. After flashed that unit should reflect SW 1K0-907-530-AE with SWL 0112 or newer.

Although I cannot confirm if this will resolve the issues I would update a control module before replacing it

If 0F module means the Sirius receiver under the passenger seat, both harnesses have been disconnected. If 0F is something else, please let me know.

I'm with you on a reflash, so I will get that in work ASAP. OTOH, I'm headed to a parts yard this weekend and, if I find a newer car, such as a MK VI, I'll look at pulling the CAN-gateway as that could be cheaper than a re-flash. (I assume the dealer would reflash the SEL's CAN-gateway, but I don't know what I'd get charged for the work.)

I wonder whether the CAN-gateway has to be in the car to get reflashed...

I'm trying to sort out CAN Bus gateways...

Reflashing my existing gateway is an option, but I'd expect to have to pay VW about an hour of labor to do the reflash.

I saw this gateway new for about $100. 1K0907530AA it's advertised as being updated.

I would dearly like to find an authoritative list of gateways so I could tell what my options really are.

My car is sitting idle with the lower dash pulled apart until I can sort this out... frustrating.

While fiddling around with the 37 NAV controller, I found an option that needed to be unchecked "make BT module inactive." Now active, BT works. Next up is getting the MFD to display. I also have hope of getting some multi-function steering wheel functionality, but so far the audio buttons have no effect on the stereo.

For Dana: scan posted. Hope it tells you what you want to know. Sorry for the delay.

The SEL is still partially disassembled...especially inside. I'm waiting on some pins for the microphone harness. Once I get those installed and confirm that the microphone is working, I'll button up the dash and reattach the sensor on the top vent.

Some errors here make sense. I have the license plate lights out, so they're throwing a code. This error is probably due to an LED bulb install (00132 - Outside Door Handle Illumination/mirror Light Passenger Side 012 - Electrical Fault in Circuit)

Not sure why I have a convertible top error on each door. (Convertible Top Control Module (J256))

Still no luck on the NAV to MFD Display, but the high line CECM is still in a cardboard box.

The Highline CECM (or is this called a BCM, like it is in the MK VIs) is in the car, as is a new CAN bus controller.

The red high line MFD doesn't display any NAV info from the RNS-315 and the (MK V) MFSW controls don't control anything on the RNS-315.

Otherwise, the RNS-315 works fine...

I really wish I could get the MFD to display info from the -315.

MFSW control would be nice, too.

Are there any other parts to buy? Is this just a coding problem?

The VW in question is a 2009 JSW with a new high line CECM (or BCM), a new (upgraded) CAN bus controller module, and an RNS-315 retrofit.

Problem: The red high line MFD doesn't display any NAV info from the RNS-315 and the (MK V) MFSW controls don't control anything on the RNS-315.

Otherwise, the RNS-315 works fine...

I really wish I could get the MFD to display info from the -315. MFSW control would be nice, too. I have seen photos at myturbodiesel.com of NAV inputs on the full red MFD. (I don't know which OEM NAV was driving the MFD in those photos.) I don't know about the steering wheel controls working.

There's a saying that "pictures don't lie," but I've also seen info that says the -315 won't drive the MFD, nor work with steering wheel controls due to data protocol incompatibilities.

Can the RNS-315 drive the stock '09 JSW SEL display? Are there any other parts to buy? Is this just a coding problem?

I've tried coding just about everything that seems relevant, but nothing so far has shown any signs of working.

The RNS-315 works fine in its own world, but it is pretty isolated from the JSW's built in controls.

I've gathered from research that the BAP protocol that the RNS-315 uses is only partially compatibile with my very late MK V electronics.

The multi-function steering wheel has no effects on the RNS-315.

The MFD doesn't display anything from the RNS-315 and I've lost display screens since removing the compass and unchecking the position sensor in the CANbus controller.

OTOH, the BT works fine, though there's no voice dialing.

Is there any more to do here, or am I done?
