THIS is precisely why we need MANDATORY boater safety education for EVERYONE regardless of age. And it should be required before being allowed to drive ANY motorized boat. Heck, I have a 100ton Master (boating equivalent of a CDL) and feel inadequate at times.

It's not mandatory to take boating lessons here in Ontario, but is mandatory to have a Pleasure Craft operator Card, to operate any powered watercraft.

Wether it's for a little trolling motor on an inflatable John boat or a full out power boat.

One of the biggest on-line issuers for the card, makes it mandatory for a 3-hour course that covers the basics. Before taking the actual on-line test.

I'm a fast reader, and I had a bit of experience before doing the test. So I was done the lessons in 1.5 hours. But with the 3-hour minimum, I had to re-do the lessons a second time before taking the test.

    Thanks

Here in MI in 7th grade we all had to take boater safety class. I'm not sure if it was mandatory or just my school being by Lake St. Clair but I have used alot of that info here 14 years later when boating.

I'm stating to think it wasn't mandatory judging by what I see on Lake St. Clair on a busy weekend

When I got a jetski in my early 20's it required a boater safety cert to operate for people under 25 (I think)

I made sure my friends had theirs before they took it out. We had to take the online test to print our certs and all my friends banged through it and passed on the first try thanks to taking boater safety in junior high school.
