they were unsure at first so they got VWoA involved. Took HQ 4 days to reach a verdict and finally authorize the warranty work. Don't know that everyone will be so lucky. If I had to do it to over again, I would've taken it to a different dealership that I know is more mod friendly.

Well, it looks like I have the dubious honor of being the first one to have his SECOND water pump go bad!!!!! I heard a whine when I started the car today, when I got to work I popped the hood and took a look and heard the whine right where the pump lives. I noticed the plastic housing covering the pump cracked and pushed out, which means the pulley has broken free. Hopefully the damage is not too serious because it did not totally come off and shred the timing belt which, as we all know, would have definitively ended real bad. I guess this answers the question everybody has been asking...Is the replacement pump the same as the original. I vote, YES it is!
1st time - 2400 miles
2nd time - 6900 miles

Wow, that is complete BULL****. EVERYONE knows about Lemon laws. I would be very wary of the liars at that dealer.
Sorry to hear about your second pump. Did they replace the whole engine the first time? If not, it makes you wonder if there was something causing the water pump failure and not the water pump itself.

Just heard from the dealer, the cracked plastic housing over the water pump was not the water pump going bad, it was the motor mount. The mount broke and smashed the housing. They say the pump is fine. In my anger that my car was broke again I posted before I had all the facts, sorry, my bad.
Still, broken motor mount, damn I'm I having bad luck!

How the hell did you break a motor mount?
Must be all that Stage 2+ torque, haha.
Wonder if that's something highly modded Rs might see. Then again, if so, I'm sure someone would have mentioned it before now.
Guessing they had to pull the engine to do the head work last time you had WP failure and didn't put the mount back in properly or something.

I had something like this happen in my A3 after the first timing belt service. In my case, it was not the mount, but the bolts holding the motor mount bracket to the block. When the tech put things back together after the timing belt service, he either forgot a bolt or forgot to tighten one or more bolts. When I brought it back to the dealer a few days later, one of the three bolts was missing, one was cracked in half, and the remaining one was bent and was the only thing holding the bracket to the block. The passenger side of the engine had dropped down and the twisted bracket and mount were pushing into the belt cover and causing a whining noise. If it wasn't for the noise, I probably would have driven it until the bracket came off completely. I was out of warranty then but the dealer owned up to the problem after inspecting the car.
In the case of this R, it could have been that the tech made a similar error during the first repair.

Got my R back from the dealership and the build date was not March it was Feb 2012.

Add mine to the list:
3/10 build date -> 2766 Miles. Engine replaced. The dealer could not give me details on the build date of the replacement engine.

That's crazy that they replaced the whole engine. Most of us have only needed the cylinder head as well as the belts and water pump (obviously).

Has anyone had this problem with a STOCK 2013 R?
I just bought one.
I'm trying to buy an extended warranty from the dealer who does them always seems to be out. The brochure they gave me on the extended warranty seems to be from a third-party co., not VW. Any of you guys buy an ext. warranty?
Thanks.

Have a 2/12 build. 5000 miles. All ok so far. Is there a way to tell exact build date?

As a March owner w/ 5k miles, I'm a little worried about this with regard to modding. As of now though, no one has been denied a warranty repair for this issue, regardless of mods, correct?

Build date 02/12. Is the water pump near the alternator? EDIT - sorry I saw the pics in the other threads. Based on those threads, I'd say my water pump is toast and the timing belt is badly damaged (burning smell)
Came to a stop light, heard a loud whine. Thought it was a car in front of me. Went to pull away and the whine got loud and the car stalled. Got it to limp a few hundred feet to a parking lot whining and grinding the whole way. No CEL.
Sound/grinding is coming from below the alternator. Burning smell. Being towed to the dealership as I write this.
