Thread: Anybody think 20's are too small Passat need 22's (pics)

  1. 09-07-2012 08:26 PM #1
Been experimenting and posting on other threads but thought I need to start a 22inch thread. 20's look great on a spring dropped car but as you get lower and lower not to mention the sheer size of the passat I can't help but feel 20's are to small? Is it black paint on black tires and black accented wheels causing this visual effect? 22 would ride considerable worse more weight and less tire it would be a 225/30R22 yes Continental DWS makes it would be all season and softest of the tires I could do in this size. I think maybe a little weird such a narrow tire from the back but the car would be so low it would be dark and you would not be able to see it.

Opinions please?? I know most cars look like crap and ghetto with 22's but I am talking about a larger sedan like ours and dimensional speaking proportions. No ghetto chrome wheels or anything like that talking conservative styling say something bigger then what I have or Vossens.

You think 22s would fit? I've seen it done on a CC so it may work. I think you are trying to make it more difficult for me to decide on wheels.

Yes would fit its only a 225 tire so its narrow. The height would be off a bit but as you've seen our cars can go low so only extreme lowering would cause you any issues. I took the springs out to get that low and no rubbing now image springs are in and coils are all compressed it still wouldn't go as low as in my pics as the springs would add about 3-4inch compressed. They sit in the cup of the control arm so would say about 1-2" higher then what I have from rim to fender.

I don't think a 22" tire would be 2-4 inches higher diameter (were talking top and bottom now). 22's would work because your talking 1/2inch increase in diameter from guys running 245/35R20 to a 225/30R22 so tire its 1/4 taller on top and 1/4 taller on bottom the math works out. If you can deal with 1.3mile variance in speedometer reading fine if not dealer can fix this for you and tell the MFI the % difference for correction this would be the only minus in the equation outside of fore mention mentioned higher weight and rougher ride.

here's a guy in an older lincoln LS 22's looks proportional to the size of the car which is about the same as ours

Most convincing evidence I think are (looking at size not style of ****ty wheels below). Your showing a lot of wheel so doing a Red lobster meal on a Mcdonolds budget just wont cut it. You have to select the right wheel and lower the car or else its looks horrible. Also unless you have more chains around your neck then Mr. T, STAY AWAY FROM CHROME...

Guy needs to lower his car..

All the 22s I've looked at are 22x9 +35 and I thought we already decided a 20x9+35 would stick out too far, tacoing the fenders as you say. Another concern I have is in the front. I'm still on HR springs and the is not a lot room between the tire and the cup the spring sets in on the strut. That may not be an issue on your coilovers though. I've thought about 22s bc like you think they would fill the wheel nicely. Maybe I'll give it a shot if I can find the right wheel. Also I havent seen 225/30/22 on tire rack but sure a local shop could get them.

After looking some more I see that Nutek does make a 22x8.5+38 in a cast wheel. There were some others that I saw in the same size but they were forged wheels and I don't want to spend 5g's on wheels.

If your going air ride suspension anything is possible. But at 22's the profile(30) on the tire is way to small in my opinion and the car tends to ride like s...no matter what. But it is ur car so do what makes u happy.

    @TDI Brad

    1) Wheels hitting strut

    A) 22x8.5 et35 would have 7mm more clearance on the strut side since edge extends 19mm more toward the outside

    B) 22x9 et40 et40 would have 5mm less clearance on the strut and edge extends 21mm

    C) Wheels would be Vossen, MRR but I think for your purpose and mine the perfect and most affordable wheel would be ACE CONVEX which is offered in the correct 20x9 et40 and could be had for 1500-1750 or so which is the same price range as a 20's

    D) Get in your car turn the wheel and go look at your clearance? Give yourself about 1/2 since tire grows when its spinning at high speeds if you can clear the strut vertically with 1/2 clearance then where would it rub that a 20 wouldn't?

    2) Tire selection 225 would be best as its the shortest you could go 235/30-20 or even 245 but the car would be that much taller and also the clearance on the strut you mention.

    A) Here you go about the same price as a 20inch tire in this soft riding DWS that carry 500A rating and guarantee for 50k miles

Continental makes the 225/30R20 but you need to call as its discontinued but they have some just not enough to say in stock to hundreds of vendors. Or go with 235's I would do 225's until they wear out which would be years latter at that point so if this size is available again which as time goes by more will do 22's or go 235 to replace the worn out 225

    http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=...0+22&_osacat=0

245's are everywhere in this size

    3) Nutek are more money than Bavaria same company and some same styles.

I you were worried about 20s making the brakes look small but 22s would most certainly dwarf the brakes. Besides looks could the stock brakes handle the extra weight from the 22s? Have you thought about upgrading your brakes, I know there isn't a kit for our cars but I have looked at some brembros for A4's and A6's thinking those may work. Its around 3000 for the four piston kits but might be out there for less. What do you think about that mod? Also I checked out those ACE Convex wheels and they are sweet but they have a 70+mm hub. Is there a hub ring for us that goes that big.

For a bigger wheel I think you need something with more surface area to look at rather than one with a lot of empty space.

  11. 09-09-2012 05:07 AM #11
yes on hub centric ring 70mm. You can get up to 72mm down to 57.1 easily hub bores go to 78.10mm but less common.

    http://www.jegs.com/i/Detroit-Wheels...rentProductId=

Those wheels only go to 18" and are silver they have reps up to 19" where they do the machine face and black windows like the pic I wanna say A6 wheels in the lux pkg on the style.

Brakes is easy MK5 or MK6 Golf R will fit there was a thread with a burgundy car with OZ wheels where he did it this opens up the world of brakes from all brands. Brembo use to be good now just for looks they will be heavy and calipers oversized for the braking power they provide. Porsche collaborates with them but as you can see have gone their own way and the in house brakes surpasses what brembo has out. Don't get me wrong they have some nice stuff just in OE applications on cars 300k and up but not add on. They will be very big, heavy and flashy for everyone to see. The add on stuff is put together by their US importer Race technologies and not something Brembo officially does unless its the GT or GT-R kits in which they tested the kit Race tech came up with and offer then globally vs Race tech US dist.

Best brakes out there hands down is Alcon but will not offer the looks. Their 4pot have as much brake force as the brembo 6pot with the advantage of being the lightest 4pot system out but again they don't offer the look, Stasis kits for audi are rebranded Alcon Kits.

I think factory Golf R kit be the cheapest I price out the kit some time back it would be 3k front and back from the dealer new parts without pads which of course everyone would want to upgrade to aftermarket low dust. You may get lucky to get some take offs as people upgrade but your not saving a whole let getting used stuff as they are in demand.

Audi A4 A6 still use double wishbone set-up and not mcpherson like we have so the hub will be different along with caliper carrier for the brakes or else I would go RS6 ceramic brakes for sure.

Saw this today the only matte black Aventador in the country when I went pick up my front wheel. Brakes were huge and orange and would stop a 747 last time I saw brakes that size were on a LeMan Audi R10 prototype LMP1 class

For sure its true what you said a full face wheel will have more surface and appear larger because you don't see the voids even in 20". I really wanted the MRR HR3 just that the rear in 20x9.5 would be 3mm to much offset even with machining. My wanting to go 22 was that I have a wheel with open space as you've mentioned and can't overcome it in the 20 size. my issue on wheels is getting something that fits and that I also like which seem to be at odds throughout my search. A full face wheel in 22 would weigh a ton and look huge like 26's ,selection in 22 is limited also going spacers is not ideal for not only fitment but added costs. There is a huge trade off between looks and function on the 22" decision but the DTM/BTCC touring car look is difficult not to admire and even more so in avoiding the quote "DONK" look we've seen in the rough parts of town.

This car has truly been the hardest to fit and is probably why we don't see more cars with aftermarket wheels since the car came out in 2011 as a 12 model. TCM GLX, Texas2lo and myself seem to be the only persons running 20's in a non-replica wheel. Out of those 3 two of us have played around and changed wheels to try to fit this car. Reps for sure would be the easiest fitment as we've seen over time on the board. I'm trying to break the mold to have a larger variety of flavors as there are only so many passat colors we can put reps on before we run out of variety and start having clone wars.

Just my 2cents, I think you should get your suspension figured out before working on the size of your wheels.

  14. 09-09-2012 12:22 PM #14
Agree on the replica wheels comment, only so many sets before everyone has run the same.

That being said, d suggest looking at Audi wheels both OEM and Replica. The new a6 and a8 come with 20s and offers work in our cars.

I personally hunk 22 is a bit too much, I like the idea of a staggered 20 masthead. I'd kill for the Amg wheel I have, in a 20x9.5-10 with the correct offset in the rear.

    Anyways, just my two cents.

PS, I have started craving these wheels recently for my ride

That's a photoshop pic from this forum.

The exact hub on the Ace convex is 72.56mm atleast thats what they list it as on Carid.

Have you checked out any 21s? That's an option on the 2013 S8. They are pretty sweet.

I'm not sure what the specs on them are but they can't be far from the 20x9 +40 A8 wheel.
