Thread: Mkv r32 p0420 & p0430

  1. 09-10-2012 06:03 PM #1
My MKV R32 started throwing a P0420 code just after 60K. At about 63K I changed the air filter and spark plugs, and decided to change out the coil packs. I cleared the code and about 1,000 miles later it came back. I cleared it again and in another 1,000 miles or so it came back. The reason I cleared the code is that the fault has always been "Intermittent" and was hoping that the new parts may help. Then I cleared it a few more times cause I was too busy to fix it...

Yesterday the MIL came on and I scanned with my Vagcom and now I have graduated to both an intermittent P0420 Bank 1 and P0430 Bank 2.

Anyone else experience this? I am not completely sure if these O2 sensors are upstream or down stream of the cats, if I am correct I think I have four O2 sensors total.

Could I simply have dirty or failing O2 sensors, do I suspect a failing cat(s)? I am just over 66K on the car so if the cats are bad they should be a warranty repair. Is it worth spending the money to have the stealership run a diagnosis?

I had P0420 code. Turns out it was the cat. If your going to do it I wouldn't wait because when I brought mine in it was the last month it was covered under warranty.

Just be sure everything is ok and in order with all else on the car. They will try and find any reason to charge you for something. Also make sure your oil level is not high.
