Thread: Best coils for track use?

  1. 09-11-2012 03:55 PM #1
Alright so I'm looking at getting my suspension in the next month and was wondering for you guys that race what would you say is the top 3 coils to get? I don't give a rats ass how low they will go since the lowest ill ever put the car is maybe a 2" drop. Id also rather not spend $2g's on a set so that I can afford the control arm and rear beam bearings and a good sway bar but if it's neccasary I'll do it.

I really like the adjustability of the BC's and the b&g's and the price is great too but can they handle the abuse of autocrossin with occasional track and the monthly mountain runs?

I personally like the Koni 1150's. They're under $1200, adjustable and come with a lifetime warranty.

PS~If you're interested in tuning your setup you can check out this thread I started that has been getting some really good info (thanks to meboice and others). GL

Before you buy a set, be aware of where the adjustable damping is situated. If you're in a mk4 any top adjusted coilover will need to be dropped out of the rear of the car to be adjusted. PITA. Not sure about the other generations. A few manufacturers address this issue.

PS: Avoid Vmaxx Xxtreme for track use. I made that mistake, I blame my scottish frugalness.

^ Some rears require that you remove the shock to adjust dampening. This isn't such an issue if you intend to set it and forget it.

Pretty much all decent coilovers within the price point of the 1150's will be like this. If you go up to the next range in price, you'll find several that have a dial adjuster in the rear.

I'd also stay away from Raceland and FK.

I've had pretty solid results with Koni SS. My current build will be using Eibach Multi-Pro R2's which are around $2k.

That doesn't really matter. A buddy who had a 20AE used Bilstein PSS9's. The rears can be adjusted w/o having to remove them and they run about $1500.

If it is a full primarily track car find a used set of the AST/B&Gs. They sold out of them and are not making any more.

Call Redline Speed Works in N.J. they will point you in the correct direction. It seems the other options are no longer available.
