I got a new house and the room is prewired for surround sound speakers. I have an cheap old sony set that works ok. But it is nothing fantastic. I checked the DIY/FAQ page and there is no information on speakers.
I thought about Bose acoustimas speakers but after reading some threads they don't seem to be all that great.
I know to that for anyone to suggest anything they would need to know the budget, room size, whats powering them, height, and some other stuff. So what do I want to look for in regards to the specs of the speakers to compare them? I'd rather spend 10cents once than 5 cents three times so I just want to get my facts straight before I jump into this.

Depending on what type of install you want... you have a few choices. I've heard good things about Monoprice's in-wall line:

Or, if you've already got your front speakers and want to timbre match... check out the offerings from the same maker/line.

What does the room look like? Are you doing just LR and RR or also presence speakers?

You can't compare speakers based on spec's.

As you said in your own post, no one can really give you any decent recommendations without knowing what the room looks like, how it lays out, and what your ballpark budget is.

Your question is the equivalent of asking for help buying a car, and not giving any more details. How is anyone supposed to help? Answer a few basic questions, and I'm sure several people will be more than happy to assist.

^ what they said. you said it well yourself too, VWBeaner--spend a bit now, rather than doing it over again later.
if i were in your shoes,i'd go out and get some HiFi/Home Theater magazines and see if anything in your price range catches your eye.the book,"Home Theater for Everyone" by Robert Harley is also quite good and it may help you narrow down what you need (and don't need) for your theater room.

you may also want to poke around on Ebay to see if you can score some good speakers for cheap.i've had tremendous luck buying stuff on there in the past 6 months.good luck and have fun
