Thread: Amp Hookup - Wire mismatch?

  1. 09-12-2012 03:42 PM #1
    Hello all!

I bought this car a while ago as a project and now that it's road-worthy, I've noticed that the headunit works but I have no sound.

The stereo worked fine when I bought it, but I had three shops work on the car since then and I didn't actually use the radio since the first shop worked on the car.

Now, looking at the amp... It's almost as if I'm missing an adapter or wire of some sort.
It seems like both wires in the attached picture are in the same harness, so I assume they're for the amp. Right? But only one of them fits in the amp.

Assuming all I need is that one wire... that means the problem is somewhere else. It's not the fuse.

I'd appreciate any help on this... Thanks.

    EDIT

After some research I've found that I am indeed missing a wire. haha
I guess it's time to start digging.

    EDIT AGAIN!

I removed the interior and trim of the hatch and followed the wire pretty far, it seems as though all the wires are there.

    I'm completely lost now.
    Any help?

On my 20th there is a green plug like the one in the picture and a white one that looks pretty much the same. The black one in your pic looks like the plug for the CD changer.

The body shop had the whole interior apart... are you suggesting they put that wire in backwards?

If I take out the head unit and that's what I see I might kill someone.

I wouldn't think so. More like there is another plug behind the trim or under the carpet that didn't get hooked back up. When I got my car back from the body shop there were a bunch of little odds and ends they didn't finish up. Seems pretty typical from body shops. As long as the body work and paint is good, that's all I cared about.

The black plus isn't used if you don't have a CD changer.

Yes - they did do a good job. Which I am happy about.

I just don't get where this wire could be, I followed the harness down past the back seat.

I guess I could try to follow it from the other end... I'm looking at service manuals trying to figure that out. Any ideas on where to start?

Just went out and looked at mine and the wire for the white plug goes back towards the tail light and runs along the back of the car. Assuming you have a Golf/GTI, I'd start there.

Thank you very much for your help.

I don't think the wire is there... but I will check again. If it's not I'll have to start at the other end.

Looked like it ran in some clips right under the driver side tail light.

This is right under the tail light.

    Yeah... it's not there...

Does that wire run down and under the plastic trim, toward the right tail light, or does it run with the other wire(green plug)?

It goes towards the other tail light. It's tough to tell if it goes that far without pulling the trim out.

I don't see the wire near the other tail light either.
If you open the panel on the right can you see the wire?

It would just be nice to have an idea of where to start digging at the interior... There's gotta be something in this service manual.

    Bump!

I took out the right interior panel behind the driver's door, and I can see the wiring harness. It looks as though the whole harness is missing that second plug/wire?

    I'm so confused.

Alright, well after some research I've found that the missing wire leads to the head unit, which should make it easy to find.

Taking out the HU tomorrow, and I'll see if I can follow the wires backwards.
