Thread: Is this a good idea (rust protection) on new Routan?

  1. 09-14-2012 10:18 AM #1
My Routan is still brand new (2 weeks old) and when I checked the under body some of it is protected with sprayed rubber paint and etc. I live North East region and believe the salt, sand and snow can get to any metal part and eventually eat away..

I am wondering should I cover the exhaust pipe and other paint areas with POR-15 rust protection paint? If I do this, do I have issues with warranty? Did anyone do this here? Any help/input greatly appreciated?

If I recall correctly, the exhaust systems are stainless steel and should not need any further protection, even if there are rust spots on it, but as far as the underbody, paint might be better than an undercoating, as the thick rubbery spray has been shown to trap moisture, promoting rust. The newer vehicles are better protected from rust than ever before, and I would be surprised if rust became a problem. Some parts are expected to have a (protective) coating of rust. Hope this helps, but I know that salt is a big problem up north, here in Florida it's just on the table.

Check out a product called 'Fluid Film'. I've heard good things about it, was planning to try it, but haven't had the time as yet. Let me know what you think.

Okay, I did a good study on fluid-film. It looks okay - however, you need to spray this every year, that is the only draw back. Let me see whether I can get underneath without jacking. Did anyone try going underneath without jacking up?

I live in Chicago and they throw salt down in abundance. I've never gotten a rust protection done on any of my cars. Lot's of underbody surface rust? Yes. But, after 5-9 years none of them rusted through.

On a "show" car, I've rust-oleum high temp painted by exhaust pipes black. No rust, no ugly surface rust.

If you're not doing the labor, might be cheaper to let the exhaust rust through and then just replace it?
