Hey John
Let me know if you need to use a VCDS cable for the mod! Also, can't wait to see the finished product...I've been thinking of doing this myself

Yes indeed, and it's come in handy plenty of times already!
I Haven't checked yet to to see if I can do my tails without having to cut any wires and (just change settings). I have read that a couple of guys on the forum (who are in NA) have done it! and it tends to be with earlier models, so who knows... I just haven't gotten around to it.

AFAIK if you stick with OE NA spec tails, you have to cut a wire to get the donuts. There's a guy in upstate NY who offered to help me with this mod, if I drove to him, which was pretty decent. But I'm getting these outer tails at a screamin' deal.
We should meet up for beers. There's another guy on PW I've met with a B6 who's also local. SHould organize something.

I would love to be in the know here lol what exactly do these tails look like?

When they're not on, they look like OE North American spec. But the signal ring or donut on the euros is amber in colour, rather than the NA red.
Plus, you can VAGCOM them with various combinations for lighting. EX. I will program the donuts to be my running lights and blinkers and have the red donut centers only work as brake lights.

That sounds awesome! Right up my alley kinda like flashing custom Roms on my galaxy s3 lol

I only get the 3W version. They have 7W, but it is very bright and blind the car behind.

I'm bumping this thread for a couple of reasons.
One... I couldn't find a decent DIY on wagon tail light removal here or on PW, but after some searching I found a great instruction set. For search purposes, how do I remove and replace the outer tail lights on my B6 Passat wagon?
http://ww2.justanswer.com/uploads/na...125556_cas.pdf
Two... I need to know my programming options for VAGCOMing euro tails. Lots of donut DIYs for non-euro tails, but I I need someone to educate me on the programmable options for OE euro outer tails. I know they have the amber outer ring and that's essentially the blinker/turn signal, correct?
Am I right to assume I can use VAGCOM to set the outer amber donuts as my running lights (ie on with the headlights, so when cruising, from behind you'll see only the amber donuts)? And then the inner center is the brake light... and then what option(s) do I have via VAGCOM to make my turn signal?
IIRC, the euro light has a red and amber outer LED, correct? Can I program the ECU to blink red or amber or does the outer amber just blink when used for signalling?
TIA

I also have a Passat wagon, and I followed the same procedure listed in your link: pop off of the cover with the reflector, unscrew and remove the bolt, and then remove the lamp assembly. I picked up a standard 5-piece trim removal set, which has a large piece with a curved end. It was prefect for inserting between the two clips closest to the fender.
As for programming, it should be plug-and-play for donut style. This will be the red LEDs and not the amber ones, however. I don't think you can program the amber ones to be on all the time. I'm not into the doughnut thing, so I had my brake light set as a running light at 15% to match the red running lights - full red when the lights are on.
While you're fooling around with VAG-COM and tail lights, be sure to turn on the emergency stop feature. Here it is on a GTI:

The euro tails are getting you a few minor differences
-Amber turn signal LEDs
-No 'side' red LED like the USDM tails
You can edit the tail lights in VCDS to be a 'donut' and you don't have to cut any wires. USDM you usually need to cut wires to get the 'donut' effect. With both types the donut is going to be red lights only.
AFAIK you cannot set the amber lights to be on as running/parking lights. You can do this with the F4D inner lights but not with the factory/euro tails.

Thanks... so I can run red donuts as running lights (and delete the donut center to only be on as a brake light) and the amber donut comes on to signal or on hazard. Right?

That's the ticket. When you're done it will look like this:

I got the Euros for my '08 and didn't VCDS them and mine are donut red as tail lights (and full red as brake) and amber for indicators, so I really don't get the VCDS part of this thread...I mean at least for me it's been fully plug and play. I think. Unless I'm missing something.
