This is the 17th year of the Glenmoor Gathering of Significant Automobiles held at the Glenmoor Country Club in Canton, Ohio. It a charity event that contributes its profits to local causes. For the price of 10 cents per car you got to see one of the best automotive museums in the world. The best part is that it was held on a driving range surround by beautiful mansions. The 250+ cars were situated on the rolling grounds on display so that could walk around the car, unlike roped shows, which I think are kind of stuffy.

However, there's nothing stuffy about the show itself. If you can afford the $25 donation you get to see some of the finest, rarest, and most beautiful cars in the world. The Glenmoor Gathering is a 3-day event. It opens Friday evening with a catered welcoming party for the judges and entrants. On Saturday morning they stage a 90 mile drive of the surrounding byroads creating a caravan of all ages of transportation, some worth many millions. The young man that transported our car (I always drive it, but it developed a power-steering noise and I didn't want to risk a breakdown) dropped our car off at a friends and became the support vehicle with large trailer and a supply of fluids.

We arrived Saturday afternoon, making the trip from the Detroit area to Canton Ohio in my nearly perfect 21,000 mile '77 Town Car. It performed flawlessly, despite a small gas leak at the fuel pump. We arrived at the country club gate and asked to state our business. I guess the guy didn't recognize that there aren't many '77 Townies on the road and asked why we were there. Oh well. We drove up to the converted Catholic monastery and check in to get my wife's judging credentials, which they had erroneously given to another judge. I picked up my credentials for my car and walked around gawking at the cars parked on the huge grass island in front of the club.

The young man that delivered my car had detailed it the night before and stashed it in my friend's garage a mile away. I drove back to the club to strut my stuff a little as many of us paraded around the huge island. I went back to the house where we changed for the artists reception before the fancy dinner. This part of the event is probably where people get the idea that these shows are snooty. While some of the shows require black-tie, this reception and dinner are a little laid back. These parties are fundraisers for the local gentry set to meet famous automotive figures and current automotive executives and writers. These are the people that are judges. The accreditation is amazing, yet there are automotive commoners like my wife, whose claim to fame is that she seems to have 30 weight running through her veins.

A big part of this show is a display of automotive art by some very famous, and not so famous people. I'll take you through the art tent.

Most of what's on display is original art, with copies for sale. The copies are what seem to keep the artists alive as the original works are $3,-10,000. This is Chris Osborne's work.

    Dave Chapple

    Gerald Freeman and others.

    This is Tom Hale's work.

The people that attended were across the board. The gentleman on the left could buy small countries, but you'd never know it. The young man is the son of an automotive editor and writer and that his father next to him in the glasses. The young man is an aspiring automotive photographer that does great work. The couple to the left are probably the finest automotive restorers in Michigan. The man with the tag is the artist who's paintings and sculpture are behind them.

As I rounded the last wall of art I was dumbstruck by this guy's work. I've never seen anything like it at a car show. He specializes if repurposing found objects. They are normally rusty and beat up bits and pieces assembled to fit his fantasy world. His name is Damon. Very cool stuff.

My wife and I both locked in on this and bought it. The teardrop shaped body is new sheet-metal, but everything else is a "found object". The fender wells are the sides of the base of an old banker's lamp. You figure out the rest.

They provided some eye-candy during the reception.

I've seen this before. It's a 1:6 scale of a Model SJ Duesenberg that runs. Mounted on an engine stand it runs on fossil fuel. He said he wouldn't dare run it in the car. His name is Louis Chenot. It took him 10 years to build.

That's the craftsman on the right.

If someone show you this picture you'd think you were looking at the real thing If the guy's fly weren't behind it.....

This show is different from others as the Chairman of the show is also the very long-term manager of the 200-room hotel and country club. The club does well and really treats it's car owners and judges well. Tickets are $250 ea. We get comped because my wife's a judge. The dinner for 500 people was prepared by their in-house chef. Before the meal they have a charity auction. Someone bid $2500 for a ride on the Goodyear blimp. They auctioned the original poster art for about the same amount. The highlight of the event is usually dinner for 10, prepared by their gourmet chef at your home anywhere in the midwest. The dinners typically go for $5000. The club manager has a home in Greece. They auctioned a vacation to Greece including air fare, meals and lodging at their home. The owner would provide guided tours and offer drives from his 85 car Porsche collection on some of the most wicked roads in the world. There were two guys behind me cussing at each other as one finally caved at $10,000. That money went to charity.

While many people think this is a snooty event it's really just a chance to rub elbows with the rich and famous, without being either.

These are the cars from the winner's circle. Each class of 6-12 cars had three winners. Two received a red ribbon as Excellence awards and one blue Best of Class ribbons were given. You were then instructed to drive by the judging stand where a commentator told the crowd about your car. You wave at the crowd and drive off. The red ribbon winners return to the original grouping of cars and the BOC goes on to the Winner's circle. The cars with the gold ribbons are corporate and specialty awards, like best paint, interior, and the like, even best patina, as original cars are now highly treasured.

Here are the cars from the Winner's Circle.

This car is stirring. The sound the Mormon Meteor makes is unlike anything I've heard. I've heard it twice. Once at this show and the other in the parking structure of the Amelia Island show. Open exhaust on a 400 horsepower car.

Others. Many I can't name. Keep in mind. These just a small portion of the cars in the show. The cars in the background are unsold auction cars.

I've never seen an Allard Coupe.

The woman on the right is Margaret Denning, who is 102 years old and as sharp as can be. That's her 81 year old 100-point Packard that she has owned for 60 years. Amazing woman.

Never got out front. If you have pictures, please post them here. The exhibitors were routed around the back of the property. I only saw a few cars after the show.

Thanks for the pictures, Barry. That 1:6 model is incredible! Is that the same guy working on the ultra detailed Continental scale model?

The guy in Switzerland is working on a 1:12 scale '56 Mark II. He has the rolling chassis and the floor pan done. Knowing the car as I do, I'm constantly amazed.

I don't know, but it looks like a Studebaker and a shark-nosed Graham had a baby.

    I'll look it up later.

I'm so bummed I missed it, but I've been enjoying the fantastic roads of Highlands, NC this week and over the weekend.

This show is a wonderful bright spot in our area and does a lot for the community. You probably ran into several of my friends from our GoCo C.A.S.T of Glenmoor. Hope to catch you next year.

That's me It's more of a hobby though. I certainly wasn't doing anything serious this weekend, just snapshots to preserve the moment. Didn't even bother editing these photos. Saw some guy casually walking around with a $60,000 Phase One camera while toting around my measly old 40D.

I would have liked to stay at the show all day, but I had to get back to school for a biochem lecture

First time seeing a real AC Cobra. Was running a little hot

I'd say you're pretty damn good. You've got a great eye for detail.

Why no love for my blue boat? You couldn't get enough of it at Willistead.

Love the Continental! It had quite a crowd around it in the morning. I meant to come back for some photos of the Continental and a better shot of the Toronado but I forgot. Also kicking myself for not getting any shots of the Mercedes that won best open car

Great stuff. I have GOT to get to this show one year as I'm only an hour away. A very close friend has modeled with cars in years past for the artists and she says what a wonderful show it is.
