i have a 64" sony dlp and id like to connect my old compaq presario r4000 to it via the vga connection. the only thing is my tv doesnt have a vga connection so from my research ive found something like these..

    http://www.amazon.com/Component-vide...a+to+component

    http://www.amazon.com/CE-Compass-Com...a+to+component

    http://www.monoprice.com/products/pr...t=1#largeimage

my goal is to be able to youtube it and vortex it from my couch with a wireless keyboard. so will all these work, any other suggestions?

I'm going to bet the quality is going to be pretty bad, both from the analog signal (made worse by going through a conversion) and the relatively low resolution for the size of the screen.

My advice? Get a tablet and a DLNA receiver or an AppleTV.

I've used the reverse.. component to vga, but I forget the company name of the box. I used it to connect my Wii to my PC monitor. Picture quality was fine, albeit, not HD from the wii.

any other info? the reviews on amazon are convincing. im not looking for 1080p quality but the converter does say it upscales to 720p which is fine with me. i mainly want to be able to browse the internet and youtube it.

How about adding a cheap video card to the computer to get dvi or hdmi output?

    You could use this-

Not the cheapest option, but wireless.

Unfortunately the refurbs are gen 3's for which there is, and from what I hear, probably won't be a hack for them. The gen 2's are selling on ebay for $150-200.

^ i was unaware of that. i don't really follow apple. but it seems there's some people working on it: http://www.iphonehacks.com/2012/08/j...pple-tv-3.html but either way, for what the op wants, a regular appletv seems to fit the bill just fine.

on a side note, i had a kayak tour today and the guy on it was apparently part of the hacking team that cracked the first iphone. it was his idea (so he claimed) that they should work on the bootloader for the hack, instead of cryptokeys (or something like that) and other means. obviously it worked

i dton want to hack anything i dont want to spend 100+ on a new monitor, what i want is to be able to connect my laptop to my tv the most economical way possible.

Well, then try the device you liked in the first post. The reviews are mixed because it's not an ideal solution. Whether its good enough only you can decide.
