picked up a 91 gli cheap due to it having a blown head gasket under $300 and was going to go about fixing it but, a friend of mine had a 1.8l 16v sitting in his garage from a previous project. the only thing he didn't have was the computer which i assume was different then the one in my 2.0? i'd like to use his engine as it has aftermarket cams and also the pulley. what other then a computer for a 1.8l would i need? the engine he has is complete and came out of his 88 gti!

buy a head gasket. put his 1.8 head with cams on your 2.0 bottom end....... job done. best of both worlds

I did about the same swap before...1.8 motor swap to a 2.0 motor. Look at both motors take pics, and check sensor for sensor and if all is good then you can jst swap it. No need to remove heads. I think there were only a couple different sensors like 3 in different places or "not there" and i had to add them, from original 1.8

you definitely want to use the 1.8 head. it is about 10 extra horsepower on the 2.0 bottom end.

thanks all for the help thus far it helped greatly, i haven't started to mess with the engine tasks to much as i am rebuilding the whole car more or less and started in the interior and also on the exterior. i had a friend who claims to know a lot tell me that i should "get the bottom end of the 2.0 machined due to the fact that the head gasket blew and could've done harm to the bottom end" any input on this matter would be great since i plan to tackle the engine in two weeks on my vacation

with a bad head gasket it is more likely the head would warp because it is aluminium, but having a machine shop check the top of the block should not cost much $$. just to be safe.
