What are the basic Upgrades/Mods to get more HP and Torque from a stock '86 Jetta Turbo Diesel 1.6 Liter engine?
How much hp can I expect?
    How much will this cost?
    thanks.

I have read the basic 3 things to do are:
    Bigger downpipe
    Add intercooler
    Giles fuel injection pump modified

Intercooler really is only needed if you are going to be pushing a lot of boost, 12-15psi or more. If you don't run that much boost, then its not going to do much for you.

    Giles pump - most definitely.
    Bigger exhaust - yes.

We have both on our TD and its noticeably faster, though we did both of those coupled with a full top to bottom rebuild. But it feels pretty close, if not as fast (or even a bit faster) than our '01 TDI. We want to dyno the car, but haven't yet.

The project - '84 Jetta 1.6TD, 186k+, fully rebuilt, Giles IP and injectors, 2.5" custom exhaust, 51mpg
    Hers - '03 BMP 20thAE GTI, 125k, all stock...for now
His - '01 Jetta TDI, 126k. Now has 3 pedals, as it should!

I would wonder what kind of HP each upgrade would give?
I have heard the 1.6 td can be made to be as quick in a way as the 8v gti.

my 92 turbo diesel SMOKES my 86 GTI... they both have the same trannies and tire sizes as well..

GTI has a 268*cam, 4-1 header, intake & exhaust systems, its tuned good, and it runs GREAT..

my diesel runs it down every time, and gets 45+mpg while doing it!

an intercooler doesnt do anything besides make your turbo more laggy, unless you got more boost than the turbo can efficiently produce.. an intercooler is only needed when you plan on running 15+psi of boost..

a bigger downpipe, and COMPLETE EXHAUST SYSTEM are probably the best bang for your buck..

the giles pump is nice, but completely not necessary.. you can build 150+hp on a stock pump and injectors if you know how to tune it right..

also, buy a timing gauge, and advance your timing to 1mm as well.. stock timing specs are too conservative..

I think he meant with the governor mode too.

Does anyone know if there is a way to measure hp or torque gains made when modifying the engine or car, without having to use an expensive dyno everytime?
