A friend of mine got a new Golf GTI, and I would like to know what he can do for the least amount of money (or more money) for the most performance. He saw something about replacing the rubber tubing to the Turbo with a larger diameter tube to give him some "50"+ HP... seemed too easy to me ;-) But let me know what you guys think.

      Thanks!

Why are you worried if it's his GTI.

Best bang for buck is APR Stage 1 flash tune.

Best Bang for the buck engine performance wise is the following in my opinion:
      1. Stage 1 flash (wait for a sale)
      2. Stage 1 intake (buy used if you can)

      Best for suspension is:
      1. rear sway bar (buy used if you can)
      2. Whiteline anti lift kit (buy used or wait for a month or more on back orders)

      Best misc stuff:
      1. Better tires (tire rack?)
      2. New brake pads, lines, fluid (ecs, tire rack, etc)

The best mod you can do to any car is put it on stickier tires.

flash and downpipe is by far the best mods you can do for power gains. you pick up around 60hp and 100 ft lbs of torque for around $900

Or a "flash tune" from any other reputable company (eg. GIAC, Revo, etc.)

(Personally, I love APR, just clarifying that there are many quality tuners to choose from)

      Thirded.

Get light weight 17" wheels & sticky summer tires.

This thread is about best performance mod, not best power mod.

This thread is about best performance mod, not best power mod.
Thread title said 'performance' but OP immediately started talking about hp upgrades.

Thanks to Outie, we're back on the right track (pun intended? )

OP, that 'rubber tube going to the turbo' is commonly called a Cold Air Intake (CAI), which replaces the stock air-box and generally provides nominal power increases (5-15 hp)

Congrats for not being flamed to hell in this thread, since a simple forum seach would have given you more answers than you could have possibly absorbed.

EDIT: FWIW I too am totally on board with Tim S's 'lightweight 17s and summer tires' recommendation. 18s are mostly for style not increased performance (IMO) or for housing GIGANTIC brake upgrades.

Throw a lot of stickers on it. Make sure they're angled, otherwise you're not cool.

Sorry for my delay on replying to my own thread, as well as my wording of the topic. Thanks for your information! I will probably be doing some mods to his car, or at least helping.

We were looking at an intake, downpipe, and a flash mod.

Again I thank you all for your advice.

I have plans to go this route (Vermont roads are brutal on 18") but I am having a hard time finding an attractive, light weight wheel that meets my budget. I am looking to spend $2000 or less for the tire/wheel package, and I already know that for tires I want to go with Michelin Pilot Super Sports, so I will need to stay around $300 per wheel. I am leaning towards the 17x7 Karthoums in Diamond Black. These are not very light, but I think they will look quite good on UG. I would really appreciate recommendations (and pics ) if anyone wants to contribute.

      2008 GTi
      09-26-2012 08:59 AM #30
      I have a 2008 GTi.
First, I replace the stock air intake with a K&N.

Next, I had the "suitcase" muffler taken out of the exhaust line and kept the factory exhaust tips so the car
looks, but certainly does not sound, stock.

I've listened to a couple of GTi videos on UTube...one with a Magnaflow cat back system, and the other with some other that made that car sound like a swarm of mad bees.

I think my exhaust sound is on a par with what you'd get with the Magnaflow cat back, but only cost me
$45.00 to have a local muffler shop do the work.

Have not put the car on a dyno, and don't have a local strip to test 0-60 times, but seat of the pants tells me it is faster, and sounds great.

Enkei, ronal, oz, etc. all make light weight wheels. Stock VW wheels are the exact opposite.

I am leaning towards the 17x7 Karthoums in Diamond Black. These are not very light, but I think they will look quite good on UG. I would really appreciate recommendations (and pics ) if anyone wants to contribute.
Enkei wheels are perfect for your requirements. OEM wheels are not.
Look at PF01s. Also, OZ ultraleggeras are on sale at TireRack right now.

You can look at Neuspeed's options as well!
