A friend of mine got a new Golf GTI, and I would like to know what he can do for the least amount of money (or more money) for the most performance. He saw something about replacing the rubber tubing to the Turbo with a larger diameter tube to give him some "50"+ HP... seemed too easy to me ;-) But let me know what you guys think.

      Thanks!

Why are you worried if it's his GTI.

Best bang for buck is APR Stage 1 flash tune.

Best Bang for the buck engine performance wise is the following in my opinion:
      1. Stage 1 flash (wait for a sale)
      2. Stage 1 intake (buy used if you can)

      Best for suspension is:
      1. rear sway bar (buy used if you can)
      2. Whiteline anti lift kit (buy used or wait for a month or more on back orders)

      Best misc stuff:
      1. Better tires (tire rack?)
      2. New brake pads, lines, fluid (ecs, tire rack, etc)

The best mod you can do to any car is put it on stickier tires.

flash and downpipe is by far the best mods you can do for power gains. you pick up around 60hp and 100 ft lbs of torque for around $900

Tune, Downpipe, Intake, K04, Clutch, rear swaybar, coilovers. I have the Outlet Pipe and I'm pretty sure it didn't do a damn thing.

Or a "flash tune" from any other reputable company (eg. GIAC, Revo, etc.)

(Personally, I love APR, just clarifying that there are many quality tuners to choose from)

      Thirded.

Get light weight 17" wheels & sticky summer tires.

This thread is about best performance mod, not best power mod.

Thread title said 'performance' but OP immediately started talking about hp upgrades.

Thanks to Outie, we're back on the right track (pun intended? )

OP, that 'rubber tube going to the turbo' is commonly called a Cold Air Intake (CAI), which replaces the stock air-box and generally provides nominal power increases (5-15 hp)

Congrats for not being flamed to hell in this thread, since a simple forum seach would have given you more answers than you could have possibly absorbed.

EDIT: FWIW I too am totally on board with Tim S's 'lightweight 17s and summer tires' recommendation. 18s are mostly for style not increased performance (IMO) or for housing GIGANTIC brake upgrades.

Throw a lot of stickers on it. Make sure they're angled, otherwise you're not cool.

Sorry for my delay on replying to my own thread, as well as my wording of the topic. Thanks for your information! I will probably be doing some mods to his car, or at least helping.

We were looking at an intake, downpipe, and a flash mod.

Again I thank you all for your advice.
