So.. after washing my car today I went to replace the little tree hanging from my mirror with a new one. While taking the old one down, my mirror came off. How that happens, I'm not so sure. Anyway, I go to pop the mirror back into it's holder and *crack* nice big spiderweb around it. And the mirror wont go back into its holder.

...SO, I have a nice spiderweb and no middle rearview mirror. My questions are this:
-Is it safe to drive for now? (I know I need my mirror back but I'm talking about the cracked glass)
-Would this be covered under warranty? (Car is a 2011 Golf, bringing it to dealer on friday.)
-If not, how much $$$ am I looking at?

      Not pleased.

I know that only 2 mirrors are required here, but not sure if an inside one is. My grandpa has a Malibu Maxx with vertical crack all the way down the windshield and I don't think it was covered under warranty, but not sure for VW.

Hmm, alright. My car has 23k miles and is still under the 3/36k bumper to bumper if that makes any difference.

I don't think warranty will cover the windshield.

Yeah I'm certainly not going to put this off for long but it may need to wait a week or so.

your WS doesn't have a rain sensor, right? one that does for your chassis will run you between 550-600$. ouch. and yes, i had to pay out of pocket for mine. yours may be a few bucks less, but mine was $579 installed, genuine VW with sensor, no warranty coverage. that's for a mkV golf.

No sensor. Its not a gti its just a base golf... no fancy schmancy sensor

but yeah, my crack looks very similar to that just underneath the mirror mount.

      bumper to bumper,
Mirror thing should def be fixed under warranty
Glass they can try to claim its not a warranty thing but Damage, so depends on your dealer and if they buy your story or not.

in some states Glass is part of insurance coverage, so look into that as well,
      good luck

Had a similar crack behind the mirror mount and my insurance covered it minus a $100 deductible. And no bump in rates down the road, I was told.

      Tell your dealer:

      Mirror fell off.
      I went to replace it.
      The windshield cracked!
      Fix them!

They should fix it for you. Should. But then again, they might be dicks about it. It will definitely be an accommodation on your behalf, but being that the proximate cause of the spidered windshield is the mirror falling off at the slightest touch, they should. Maybe...

Saying you attempted to reattach the mirror may lead them to deny any claim.

      1) I started the car in the morning.
      2) Started backing out and the mirror fell off.
      3) I stopped the car and the windshield just cracked in front of my eyes.
      4) ...
      5) Fix it!

This would make a fantastic album cover if the radar detector wasn't there. Also maybe if the car in front wasn't there.

I don't know anything about the windshield, though, honestly, I just wanted somebody to hear what I had to say about the picture.

Went to the dealer today. They blamed it on me (couldn't see that one coming), and all they did was put the mirror back for me. So I went to safelite and my deductable is $250. Getting it replaced Monday.

Picture of the damage before they put the mirror back:

I did the exact same thing to my golf IV the other day. Got my car back after getting a new clutch. My mirror popped off while cleaning my car out and went to put it on and CRACK. No effin way. Looking at between $250 and $300 to fix it.

you should have waited for my response.

      i would have told you

      1. put the mirror back
      2. check exterior of window for any rock damage
      3. if no rock damage go to dealership and say your window cracked out of nowhere.
      4. new windshield
      5. profit.

If you have full coverage (this being a newer car, I assume you do) then check with them. My insurance has replaced the windshield in my wifes xB 3 different times (its a problem with the first gen xB) at no charge. no deductible either.

If you do check with insurance, don't give them your full story. Just say it happened on the interstate.
I'm just your local purveyor of Miata and Nissan Z-car fanboyism.

Does your insurance have free glass replacement? My policy with State Farm does.

      EDIT: Already been covered.

this happened to my 2003 jetta wagon.

      its still safe enough.
if you wreck maybe not. but to drive down the road you will be fine.

are ONLY two exterior mirrors legal?
      probably.
many states only require two mirrors, any two mirrors. think of RV's, buses, delivery vans, etc.

FYI. as mentioned. you WILL notice that mirror is gone. you WILL look it a thousand times and think ARG.

will VW cover it for you on warranty?
dunno. cannot hurt to ask. but i would venture no. the mirror fell off, and your attempt to fix it broke the windshield. i would assume that they will say no because your repair of the mirror caused the mirror break.

FYI. many insurance companies will not put a real 'point' against your account for getting glass replaced.

i replied and hadnt realized you did the replacement already.

      yeah. if it happens again.

if your mirror fell off that little arm, you need to rotate the arm and it will pull away from the glass.
then you can attempt to mount the mirror onto the arm OFF the glass.

once its all together lightly put it back on the glass and rotate into locked position.
