autozone rents out pretty much anything. big lots has decent car stands; they won't **** up your rockers. and harbor freight just became your new best friend.

Anyone locally around CO willing to do a timing chain job on my GTI? Chains/guides are going out and need to get it all replaced. I don't have that many tools either so if you have them, I can drive wherever needed. I will also pay you and supply you with beer/food. Just don't want to drop $1200 at a shop. I also hope this person has done a few of these installs before and is experienced with VR6's.
Also, anyone know where to get the kit cheaper than MJM?

I actually know Jordan pretty well...haven't talked with him about it yet mostly because I know he hasn't worked on a mk3 that much before. But with a VR a bit. I'll see what he thinks...

i can do chains blindfolded.
if you're gonna do them, might as well do it right. pull the whole motor and do the clutch too. I've done mkiv chains in the car and what a nightmare. will never do that again.
arp flywheel bolts will run you slightly more than the factory flywheel bolts. upgrade everything and you'll be left with a vr6 ready for another 200k miles.
if its a mk3, just pull the motor. throw it on a stand and go to town. make it easy on yourself.
and how do you know the chains need replaced??? I've seen stock block vr's with 175k boosting 30psi.

Would you be willing to do them for me? Like I said I can drive anywhere and will provide, money, beer, food, whatever you need. Yeah I'd definitely do the clutch while it's out since the tranny has to be pulled.
I know because the PO never did them and it's at ~119k right now. It has every single symptom of them going bad...and they're real loud.

thats some dirty work. i don't like doing it much anymore because of my back. bending over for long periods does a number on me.
it would take at least two days I'm guessing...
buuuut if you did the work, i.e. pull the motor, get it torn down, cleaned up and ready to go id be willing to help set the timing. then you just need to put it all back together and slap it in the car.

I've never done anything that substantial before so I'd need a fair amount of guiding...but I'd be willing to help you out the whole way through. I wouldn't mind if it were a 2 day job. Just need to get 'er done. And pulling everything would be a great learning experience for myself...
