Thread: Removing paint from cabinets?

  1. 09-20-2012 04:23 PM #1
So in my never ending battle to get my guest bathroom finally painted I came across this thanks to the previous owner.

Is there a good way to get that off without damaging the cabinets?

Also just looking at these pics, I noticed it's confined to just the piece of trim, is this a readily available piece from a home depot/lowes? I think it would be easier to lift that piece up and just replace it, assuming its probably just held on with finishing nails?

are the cabinets finished (polyurethaned?) or bare wood?

is there a chance that the paint is on the poly only and did not penetrate into the wood? you may be able to 'scrape' off the extra paint.

otherwise, i would pop that trim off, sand lightly to remove the paint, and reapply a matching topcoat.

Looks like you could find a similar-sized shoe molding and paint/lacquer it to match maybe?

I'm trying to fix a similar thing, and it's bare wood, never finished. They painted the bay window and just got paint all over. I don't know how someone could paint so sloppy. I'd take the opportunity to stain it properly, but I'm just trying to fix it quick before I sell it.

How about covering it with a piece of quarter round?

I have heard of a material called OOPS that is used to remove the paint from the cabinets without damaging its surface.
