If the next Golf R has 300hp it'll be fun to hear the story about how the Golf R IS actually an STI/Evo competitor.

The S3 is using plenty of aluminum in its chassis, there is no guarantee that VW will do the same with the GTI.

Actually, there is since they did confirm that GTI, GTD, R, Hybrid and EV versions will use the lighter, aluminium(what's aluminum ) enriched chassis.

apparently thats exactly what they are doing for the 2015 golf r.

the article i ready this morning also said they are thinking of doing a golf rs model which would utilize audis 5cyl turbo engine.

dont know how true it is and wish i could quote it but its an app that updates car info on my phone

225 or so is what's reported - another week or so and we'll know for sure, at the Paris auto show.

True, but the previous MK6 GTI is still 150-ish lb lighter than the last S3....and the Mk7 Golf is about 220lb lighter than the MK6 Golf of the equivalent trim, without the extensive aluminum components, so GTI is still on the way IMO to lose a good chunk of weight..

This all sounds and looks very encouraging, especially the sedan - that could be my first, if it looks right. As a hatch, i'd probably opt for the VW version, which I'd assume will come in at around 290hp, to keep the rating below the Audi.

Probably a dummy light, maybe a coolant/oil temp reading in MFD....Current EU MK6 have oil temp readout in the MFD....not here sadly...

      Golf R
      09-21-2012 02:16 PM #51
i was going to state the same, the next Golf R we'll see in this configuration, I don't think we'll see a S3 Hatch which the R will cover, and a price disconnected of about 6-7K just because VW < Audi ...

Anywho, I'll enjoy my current ride until the next S3/Golf R come out and "upgrade" ...

Quite impressive to say the least, I think the only thing that will keep us at bay (most of us) is the entry price.

Seems kinda lame considering the Pirelli and ED35 versions were at 235.

I'd consider trading my TTS for that. But I really have no reason to unless I was to become a 1 car family.

This would be a great Evo/STI competitor in the US. Evo and STI have become way over price and I bet this car if it was priced around $38k-40k it would destroy them sales wise. To bad Audi is not bringing this car over.

Nor would they price it under $40k.

Yeah, I'm thinking it would have to be closer to $50k, ala the 135i M.

Er, no. The S4 starts mid 40's. S3 is going to be cheaper.

A TT-S currently starts @ $47K. The S3 is less expensive than the TT-S in other markets, I would expect the same here. I'd peg it at low $40k.

I guess I was overestimating, or forgot this was an "S" and not an "RS." Mea culpa.

I hope the S3 sedan doesn't stray too far from the concept (you know, minus the 2.5T).

Quattro is the name of audi's awd.

That encompasses both haldex and torsen systems.

Either way, what's wrong with haldex 4? Too pussified for you hard core torsen guys?

Bring the S3 to the States in sedan form and you have the perfect spiritual successor to the S4s and M3s of 10 years ago.

Yeah, how dare me politely correct his very common misconception...

I hope you aren't talking to me about the haldex comment.
