Hi, new to this part of the forum, but not to VW's or engine building. Anyhow I started my first 16v Scirocco project a few months back http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?5708846-My-first-Scirocco-Build-thread-88-16v and have spent the last couple of months upgrading brakes, suspension, electrical components, etc.

Now it's time to start building a new power plant. The plan is to build the best Normally Aspirated engine I can over the winter. (Why NA? -I plan on doing some auto-x with the car)

I picked up a 91 Passat 2.0 9A with 115k on it as my starting point. I've been reading a lot and *think* I have a shadow of a clue of what might work well together, but please let me know if I'm wasting money or doing something that doesn't work out. I'm open to any and all advice, opinions, and recommendations.

Here's what I've come up with so far:

    Block -VW 9A 2.0 Increase bore to 83.5cc .040

    Crank- VW 92.8 Stock Balance

    Pistons- Weisco K611M835 .040 11.0 CR Balance

Rods- 144mm light Weight Eurospec ECR 198 144 EALW Balance

    Bearings- Recommendations?

Head- VW 2.0 16v- Port, Polish, 3 Angle Valve,

Cams- Autotech D-375-4 + New Cam Chain

    Valve Springs- Autotech 10-109-602K

Valve Spring Retainers- AutoTech Titanium 10-109-654K

Lifters- Light Weight Hydraulic BBM 109090L

    Timing Belt- Recommendations?

Timing Gears/Sprockets- Stock VW, Any reason to upgrade?

    Thanks!

    bearing : anything german made
timing belt : cant go wrong if you buy a continental
sprocket and gear : no reason to upgrade except to reduce the rotating mass but not much gain here

one more thing, be sure eveything is fully balanced and that you get a lightened IM shaft , both will help you with you n\a quest.

hey, with what you have, and a stand alone ecu you see about 165whp to 170 depends on the tune and your intake madifold. i had the same combo but changed to 288 cams , euro intake manifold ,webber tb and had 197whp... good luck with your build

Thanks guys! On the bearings are KOLBENSCHMIDT's as good for water cooled VW's as they are for air. I've had good experience with them before.

For stand alone ECU...I've thought about megasquirt, but it seems a bit intimidating and none of the shops in the area have any experience with it. This leaves me thinking about running chipped digi 1 or 2.

What's worked best for you guys?

yes Kolbenschmidt rocks, same quality, air or water cooled, I grew up building air cooled Hot VW's engines so I know where you are coming from.

and as far as Megasquirt, I say go for it, there is more support for it than you think and if you are in the Charlotte area there has got to be shops there with megasquirt experience. I just ordered my Megasuirt ECU, and have no experience with this system other than what I have been reading. Just do a search under megasquirt in the Carbs, ITBs and SEM Forum. I ordered my ECU prebuilt to get close to my particular needs and I will tune from there.
