Knocked out an oil change and tune up on the car over the weekend. Very easy to do on our cars yourself. Having the oil filter on the top of the motor is super easy. Replaced the drain plug with an ECS magnetic plug.![]()

I surely hope that it's the first time that YOU personally changed the oil, and not the first time you ever had the oil changed![]()

I went to the dealer in Joliet for the parts but didn't get a drain plug. Why are people replacing the plug instead of just the washer?
Ill keep an eye on Advance sales to see if they sell the oil cheaper than $6.30 qt.
A little FYI for those who don't already know, Just ask the dealer parts clerk for a better price and they usually will.

I stick to the Castrol only because I will change my oil every 5k and will have the dealer do it at the next 5k (under the "scheduled maintenance").
So, IMO, there's no point in switching/changing the oil when the dealer will put the Castrol in anyways
The washer is pressed/stuck on the drain "plug"/bolt.
You can't change it out
So when you buy a new drain plug, the crush washer is already on it:

You may want to check the label on the Edge 5W30 you used. It should have the VW 502/505 approval on it, but last time I checked (Autozone), all the Castrol Edge/Sytec/Titanium blends in 5w30 did not carry the VW approval. The 5W40 and the 0W30 did- at least of what they had in the racks. I think the SLX OE the dealer has is 5W30 and is obviously approved.
Probably not a big deal to run it once, but from what I've read, if it isn't 502/505, it is not likely a "true" synthetic by percent composition- ultra refined dino oil vs. say a group 4 Ester base. Which means it will likely shear-thin down to "water" as you get past 7-8k mi on your interval, assuming you're comfortable going that long. The 2.0T is pretty hard on oil, so if what you put in doesn't have the approval you may want to run it only 5k and go to 502/505 next time.
I'm one of those cult followers of "German Castrol", more specifically the Syntec/Edge 0W30. I let one change interval go a bit long (~10,500mi- blame winter, kids, schedule, etc.) on my old Passat with that stuff and it still came out of the crank case like maple syrup. It was dirty as hell and full of contaminants, but it still held viscosity amazingly well.
