    Hi all,

I have been looking around for definitive answers for my question and it seems there are a few out there.. so here it is:

I want to install an aftermarket headunit (possibly single or double din) in place of my current single din monsoon headunit (the display is shot).

I have heard horror stories that you have to run a wire to the 75x terminal under the dash for switched power, that even with the proper wiring harness you have to re-wire all the speakers...etc

I want to retain the factory speakers and amp for the time being.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't done this yet, but from my research the monsoon amp uses the speaker level inputs coming from the monsoon head unit (front L R, rear L R). Therefore if you replace the HU with an aftermarket one, you can simply connect the speaker level outputs of your new HU to the harness used on the previous unit, which will send the proper signals to the monsoon amp.

here's a link to the wire color codes:

The monsoon amp turns on when it detects a speaker signal, so you don't need to worry about running the remote turn-on wire to your aftermarket HU. As for power wiring, I'm not sure what you are referring to for the 75x terminal, and I honestly haven't looked into the power wiring yet.

Good luck and let us know how the install goes.

From what I've read, you need to run a wire to the 75x terminal for the headunit to have switched power, otherwise you have to manually turn it on and off.

an 01 does not require an accessory to be ran separately as 01's are not ran by CAN-BUS. 70-1784 is the harness for ur vehicle. simple installation (will also need the 40-VW55 antenna adapter) and pocket if u have the option cd changer up front.

I actually was just in this same situation a bit ago. I did a lot of research to find out what I might need to do. But I ended up pulling the trigger and got my pioneer deh80prs got the wiring harness and antenna adaptor. Wired everything together and plugged it all in and it worked without all that extra mess of running new wires or modifying the k-line signal.
Simply put I was worrying for nothing.
I have an 02 jetta with a single din monsoon for reference just so you know.

Yea pretty much there's an easy way to remember what harness and stuff you have to use.

<02.5 w/ a single din (or "double din" in the sense of the single-din cassette and separate din cd changer) = 70-1784, 40-VW55, and a universal or oem pocket (if you have the cd changer part and are installing a single din).

    >02.5 w/ a true double-din = 70-9003 (and run your own accessory, illumination, VSS, etc. - if req.), or XSVI-9003-NAV or equiv (data-bus harness gives you all the above without needing to run additional wires), 40-EU55, universal or oem pocket (if you're installing a single din).

Thanks for all the info. I decided to just jump into it and get it done.

I went to Best Buy ( I usually avoid that place like the plague because they make everything difficult) and bought the proper harness for the job.

Pulled the old deck, wired in the new harness, and what do you know... magic! RAP still works, no special wiring needed.

Happy camper... now if only it were that easy in my sister's '00 Cavalier... just had to order the integration harness because GM decided to start hating people who like aftermarket audio after 1999.

Here are the pics of the deck installed:

The deck is nothing fancy, but for 80 bucks on sale with all the features I was looking for, plus the ability to match the interior lights... bonus.

The best part is the dash removal of the cavalier. Lol. You shoulda PMed me. Could have seen f I could have gotten my price or close to it on the LAN harness for the GM.
