Thread: my fuel gauge stopped working...

  1. 09-26-2012 09:34 AM #1
So yesterday I was driving home from work.. I know my tank was 3/4 full.
All of a sudden, my low fuel light came on and my gas gauge needle went to empty.

The needle sits at E, but it still says about 20 miles till empty on the MFD. When I left the house this morning, it said 5miles till empty.. by the time I got to work, it said 20. Kinda odd..

I will hook up the vagcom when I get home tonight, any area I should scan for? or just a complete scan? There is no CEL error on the dash though.

Any ideas what I could look at to fix this?

    Wow...

    How odd

    A fuse?
    Sensor in the gas tank/pump?
    Problem with the cluster?

I dont think its a fuse. I just drove it at lunch and it now says 50 miles till empty. It is a very odd one.. the needle did move higher but its still not right.. im wondering if something just got stuck inside tank..

    Have you looked at this?

    I like this post:
They tapped the tank and gauge went to full. Will drive it around for awhile and if the issue comes back they will take another look at it.

Welp.. I opened the fuel cap, and then reclosed it. Everytime I took it out for a drive, the gauge kept going up a little at a time. I refilled the tank and sure enough, all is fine. I have no clue what caused it but its all good now.
