MK6. It looks the sharpest inside and out, has a decent amount of power and would I be right in assuming it's more reliable than previous gens?

Being completely serious, the MK3 is the least attractive of them all.
Thoughts expressed are those of the poster and not those of some long dead guy who I choose to speak for me.

    Mk2, in 2.0 16v form.

The Mk3 is a big fat slug. Worst GTI by far (that honor would otherwise go to the Mk4, but the GTI 337 and 20th saved it).

Great. Now you'll be killed by ZACHER3tuning-hired assassins in your sleep. Too bad, I'll miss your contributions to TCL.

Oh, before posting that I sequestered myself in a secret offsite internet location. Trust me. Not even Rove could find me here.

And what generation of the GTI family are you anyway, Vad?

Oh boy--that's a dangerous question on two fronts.

I'd say more like 'fickle and can't make up its mind', but that's just me (Although you claim to have done so now.)

    Probably the MK6.

I think they corrected some of the awkward looks of the MKV GTI (as a MKV owner I can admit this).

    GO AWAY.

And the only answer is the MK2 in 16v form. Best engine, best body, best interior.

What, you mean you don't want a poorly maintained 17 year old low budget economy car with poor ride quality covered in surface rust?

A1. Light, faster then all gtis until the 5 (second favorite). A nice A1 with single rounds (we even got a factory GTI in Canada in 78) the plaid interior and some nice light wheels and good suspension setup pretty much summarizes what these cars are about.

A2 - Best combination of light weight, tossable handling, and comfort.
A1 - Light and fun to drive. Easy to fix.
A4 - Looks timeless, can be made to go fast in a straight line (but interior falls apart and is mostly a pig)
A6 - Corrected most of the A5's flaws, but still doesn't look very Germanic. Pretty damn heavy.
A5 - Drives better than A4, but looks Japanese. Heavy.
A3 - Never cared for these. The VR6 is a boat anchor and the 2.0 8V is barely adequate. The car also looks like a Mk2 with a gland problem.
