the a2 was my first love- it was light and handled like a go cart... in this shell even the 8v was peppy
the a4- much improved styling over the a3, last generation before they got hella fat, 1.8t- DAT ENGINE!
i have high hopes for the a7 and if they get it right it will be my first new car purchase

Not faster than any that followed and the front end was mush from the factory. A tie-bar is all it needs, but I assumed we were talking stock.
A list of mods, all cars ever owned and something cribbed from a book, song and/or movie were all just here. Sorry you missed out on my unique, snowflake-like individuality.

Definitely MKIIIs. They were the last of the cars consistently under 3k LBS. Also, IMO, the last of the cars with a truly connected feel. Not saying they are great drivers cars, because they really aren't, but they do a lot of things well where the MKIV and later cars feel a little "video-gamish" to me where the MKIII and earlier cars are straight analog and a little disconnected.

Also, the interior is simple enough that it aged well and doesn't make you feel like everything in the car should have a sepia hue to it, like the older cars.

Close second is, of course the MKII, but I don't love 16 valves. I'd swap that **** for a VR in NY minute. Then again, those MKIs have been steadily growing on me...

The MKV front-end styling is it's only drawback. It is a bit awkward, but once you get used to it, it's okay.

I hated the MKV at first, then grew to like it a little more, then bought a 2.5 Jetta, and had such fond memories of it, I eventually got another MKV, this time minus a cylinder and plus a turbo.

MK1 -- because the original is also the lightest and the rawest -- so it gets my vote.

However, the MK2 is a better car, while still being extremely fun. It rides on one of the best FWD chassis before cars became fat pigs and driver assist controls ruled the day.

The Mk3 is a big fat slug. Worst GTI by far (that honor would otherwise go to the Mk4, but the GTI 337 and 20th saved it).
It's quite a bit lighter than the 20 ae.

Anyone that says the mkiii's should literally be banned from the vortex!!! The right answer is mk2, or anyone other then the mark 3's. You cant be taken seriously if you think the 3rd gen gets your vote; go punch yourself in throat for me. I dont know any of you that are representing mk3 as the best gti, but i bet you also like your cars with 2 pedals.

    Having owned mk1,mk4,and mk5 mk1 without a doubt.

The other two were good cars, and I love driving my mk5 every day but it just doesn't compare.

MK3 is my favorite. Has just enough modern creature comforts, but still light and simple enough to throw around and work on.

Close second is the MK1, classic styling, still looks beautiful. MK6 is a sharp looking example with all of the power and comfort of the MK5.

Honestly, I'd take a sedan over te rest of the Gen's. MK4 is bloated and honestly not attractive saving R32. MK5 looks too "anime" to me, and also all I ever see is bagged out, "stanced" MK5 junk. Mk2 looks like an overweight MK1, and thus does not hold a candle to MK1. (IMHO of course)

How? I honestly think the MK2 and MK3's styling are far more removed than some of the other Gen's. In fact I always thought the MK3's took more styling cues from the Corrado than the MK2...

obviously the first thing that pops out is the fogs/turns, but you can also see the resemblance in the fender flares, lower grille, hood lines, and roofline... just my $.02

just for good measure the mk2...

Yep, that's the current phase of the MKV scene. It is at the point where the baggers and stancers are all over the MKV. It's reached that almost-mature-scene phase.

It will only get worse for the next 5 years and then the MK6 bagnstance scene will explode.

The Mk 2 was tiny by today's standards, and slow. Especially the first two years felt really nice to drive. In absolute terms, I'm sure a current Yaris could take the Mk 2.

Why my favorite? It's a simple, honest car from a bygone age.

To me it looks like they just took the MK2 and made everything bubbly. I don't really think the MK3's look bad, but not as good as others. IMHO of course.

MK3 GTI. I love the front and rear end. The dash still holds up against anything on the road. The massive cupholders (seat adjusters).

I'd drive anything Mk1, 2, 3 and 5. I think the Mk4 front end looks awesome with the RS bumper but there's nothing you can do to fix that god awful rear end.

You can pretty much take ALL the MK4,6,7 and throw them right in the toilet. Especially 6 & 7 (minus the JSW).
