The collective IQ of TCL seems to have dropped with this thread. Where did these people come from, the "Mk __" forums?

  2. 09-27-2012 08:56 AM #142
I do not like one particular generation over another, all I can say is I prefer any that were build before 1995.
So A1, A2 and early A3s. After OBDII was equipped they became a hassle.

I'm not saying the VR is bad, but it's not the god engine as many on here make it out to be. I'd sooner consider an offering from Honda or Ferrari or Porsche (pre-buyout) or BMW or Nissan or Toyota or Chevorlet before VW.
Somehow they run about the same 1/4 mile stock and modded. I'm seeing mostly 14s for bolt on Preludes and VRs alike.
I'm really just here for the pancakes.

What I never understood about the VR6 is why they didn't just make a big four cylinder. It wasn't horribly thirsty by '90s standards. The power density for its weight and size is fine, again, for its era. But it's SO COMPLEX! Make a 2.5L 16v I4, slap on some counter-rotating balance shafts, done.

I voted MkIV, for the best reason: emotional.

I kept my GTI 1.8T for 11, I repeat 11, years, modded it to my taste (and budget ), had hundreds of great memories and it never let me down.

Sold it to an 18-year old guy last year; I shed a tear that day. A few months later that guy had the custom sound system I put in stolen completely, down to the wiring. I shed another tear when I learned about it.

    Not in 1993 they weren't.
Comparing 15 year old technology with technology of today is the most assinine thing I have read in this thread.
Other than the Mk3 being the best.

    Mk1
Light, crisp styling, ahead of its time by leaps and bounds.
    Mk2
Improved where the Mk1 needed it(refinement, comfort). Almost a little too polished for my tastes, but still great cars.

I don't like any VWs built after 1992(other than the 1993 Cabbys)

    voted mk2 - even though I owned and thoroughly enjoyed a mk5 GTI;

mk2 was a great package especially with the 16v and later big bumpers - it still looks fresh after all these years.

Voted MkVI. IMO looks the best (not a fan of boxy cars) and is the best overall. Maybe not best handling due to increased weight over the years, but is definitely the best out of all of them.

Two or three years ago I would've voted MKII without hesitation. I always thought of my MKIV as my daily while I found the perfect MKII. Now that I have the Subie for a daily, I was going to sell the MKIV and get a MKII... I couldn't. The 1.8t is simply too much fun to drive and mod. I'm still in the market for a II if it's the right car, but the MKIV has replaced it as my favorite. So now

    MKIV
    MKII
    MKI
    MKVI
    MKV
    MKIII

I reserve judgement on the VII. Sorry VR6 fans, but that engine in the light MKIII ruins the balance for me. 4 Cyl all the way.

I read your H22 comment, but did not include it because it lacks torque.

153lbs/ft at 5500rpm with steep drop offs on either side of that peak is weak.

This is why a VR will feel much stronger than the H22.

    H22A Found in the Japanese 5th gen Prelude Type-S and SiR S-Spec (BB6). It produces 220 PS (162 kW; 217 hp) @ 7,200 rpm & 163 ft·lbf (221 N·m) @ 6,500 rpm and comes with a red valvecover.

You're really not going to feel a 10lb/ft difference, especially given the aggressive gearing that Hondas are known for compared to the taller gearing in VWs.

For a motor we never got here, you may as well compare it to the 2.9 VR6.

And you still ignored how the US versions manage similar 1/4 miles and traps.

    I've owned MK3, MK4, and MK5 GTIs.

They were all great in their own ways... and flawed in their own ways.
    MK3 was the most fun
    MK4 was the best looking
MK5 was the best all arounder

The Mk4 in anniversary trim is one of my favs:

    Lol.

I'm going to reverse your first two and reverse the Mk3 and Mk4.

I just like the A1 the best, especially with round headlights and a front chassis brace. Back when we were playing with A1s, the A2s were considered just kind of overweight pigs and the Mk3s, when they arrived, had missed the plot entirely. Now, I prefer the A2 Jetta over the A2 Golf and just about as much as the A1 GTI
I love cars, but the problem is they are like schroedinger's hobby. They're always in a quantum superstate of being both awesome and a huge waste of time and money... until observation momentarily forces them into one state or another.

Yes you will. When one makes 163 ft·lbs @ 6,500 rpm and the other makes 173 ft-lbs @ 4,200 rpm, there's a big difference. It's also not just the peak torque, and where it makes it; the 2.8L VR6 we're all refering to makes plenty of torque 1500 rpm before that too. The agressively camed Honda will only produce sharp peaks. Good power-to-weight ratio? Absolutely, but lets face it; the Honda engine is more of a race engine, where torque is your enemy. On the street, you want the torque. It's what puts a smile on your face. The VR6 does this beatifully.

Oh and another advantage of having less agressively geared engines that make less bhp-to-displacement; increased longevity. It really does take a beating and a half to start wearing down the VR6 to the point where it starts to burn oil. I can't say the same for Honda engines.

Also, I love how all the Mk3 fanboys post modified examples of Mk3s to prove their "superiority"...

How about showing stock exemplars? I was behind a black Mk3 GTI 2.0 this morning, completely stock. Looked like a little clown car from the rear with those 15x5.5 wheels sitting so far in. And hell, I owned a black Mk3 2.0!

    Also, Golf Sport pride, y0!

How about showing stock exemplars? I was behind a black Mk3 GTI 2.0 this morning, completely stock. Looked like a little clown car from the rear with those 15x5.5 wheels sitting so far in. And hell, I owned a black Mk3 2.0!

    So sexxxxy...

    Rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr....

Short of sports cars, I'm hard pressed to think of anything that looks good stock. Maybe some BMWs, but everything looks better lowered.
I'm really just here for the pancakes.
