I'm not trying to feed the troll here, but all the Mk3 hate seriously makes me want to change my vote to Mk3 VR6. In a weird way, it's actually in keeping with the character of the Mk1....Americans all seem to think that the Mk1 was built to be a fly-weight autocross champion because we're used to big cars with big engines. But in it's original European context, the Mk1 was actually notable because they shoved a 100+ horsepower fuel-injected motor into their bread-and-butter hatchback. So it was actually a bit of a muscle car....a muscle car for 1970's Europe.

I was a kid when the Mk3 was new and I remember thinking what a novel/crazy idea it seemed (to me) to stick a "big" V6 into a hatchback. I loved the lines, the sleeper-ness of it and the fact that I knew it was faster than my dad's E36 318i (which, because it was a BMW and it made nice noises, I assumed was quick ).

Anyway these days, Mk3s seem like good, cheap, tune-able fun. And that's the appeal of GTIs, right? So can't we all just get along?

My favorite GTI is a newer one that is still under warranty. I appreciate people who tinker with old ones but I'm just looking for a fairly reliable econobox with a soul as a daily driver. My MK V GTI (still on its 7 year/100K extended warranty) is way better than my old MK IV GTI.

Regardless of intent, it is a flyweight car. It's not unheard of for a car to become more desirable over the years just by being a product of its time.

I was a kid when the Mk3 was new and I remember thinking what a novel/crazy idea it seemed (to me) to stick a "big" V6 into a hatchback.
Chevy did it first with the Citation X-11... which actually beat the Mk1 GTI to the US market by two years (1981). Of course it was OHV and made 135hp, it it was a 2.8L V6, and that car was a lot lighter than a Mk3 GTI.

Anyway these days, Mk3s seem like good, cheap, tune-able fun.
I owned one. They're just not that good. However cheap they are you'll make up for in repairs and deferred maintenance. VR6 parts were always expensive, and the damned thing is so complicated. Just because it's one of the worst GTIs (I'll reserve that full honor for the MkIV 2.0 8v) doesn't mean it's a bad car altogether. I did think it was cool enough to buy once, and this was back when they were late model cars and relatively expensive.

I see where you're coming from, but I have a feeling people are purposefully piling on the hate to counter act all of ZACHER3tuning's s and s, which is always a good thing.

I've never heard of the Citation X-11...likely because I was not yet born. Also likely because it was a Citation. Regardless, it was not the first and certainly not the last to use that formula.

Good points. But I'm still kind of amazed how people go out of their way to sh!t on Mk3s. I mean, it's still a GTI! It's not like VW crapped out a Citation X-11 or a Chevy Eurosport or something. The Mk4 (merely an overweight and less reliable Mk3) would be everyone's favorite red-headed stepchild were it not for the 337/20AE/R32.

Lets all remember the MK3 is the only generation that had a "DRIVERS EDITION".

I like how the Mk3 is second to last.

    Next to a non-existent car.

I've driven all of them. I like some things about all of them, since they are all a little different, but my gripes with them are the powerband of small displacement turbos and their on/off personality and the buzzy character of the 16 valve. The DBW lag on the MKIV didn't help, either. I guess they mod well (16 valves), but when I drove my uncle's GLI, I kept thinking, "This car would be awesome with a VR6."

In all honesty, they all need suspension mods, IMO. It's just a thing with VWs of any gen. My ideal GTI of a given generation would have a motor from the following car. IE a MKI with a 16 valve, a MKII with a 12 valve, a MKIII with a 24 valve and R32 with a 3.6, etc...
I'm really just here for the pancakes.
I'm Sorry Hachi... I love you.

you dont think i know this...If ANYONE would've started this poll besides me, i promise you the mk3 gti vr6 would be 1st o r a close second. We all know how the world, and vortex views the mk3, hell just look around, its no mystery...Its the best at what it does...It terms of cult status, the mk3 also has the biggest following. So hate away

Well well what do we have here, a poll on the best gti ever NOT started by zacher3tunning and the mkIII gti is still in forth place. NOT first, NOT a close second, and NOT even a distant third. Just fourth place barley ahead of a mk4 gti. you sir would make a great politician for making promises that are full of B.S. and aren't true

I picked the sixth generation, because I like how the front end has a mature look. This past february my family brought a lighty used 2011 gti in black. What a beautiful car. They got it with a 6spd manual transmission also. I drove it a couple of times and all I can say is what a sweet ride.

    Oh, for the love of...

Poll is gone, but read the comments here: http://skiddmark.com/2009/03/vote-fo...n-of-golf-gti/ . Not a single comment in favor of the Mk3. In fact, this one stands out: "If not the Mk1 then the Mk5 would have got my vote. It marked a return to form for the GTI badge and meant I could finally forgive VW for the awful Mk4 and so-so Mk3." Yep, those folks across the pond just adore the Mk3.

How is the Mk6 losing to the Mk4?

Oh right, because whenever there's a Mk4 Golf in any thread in TCL, all the cross dressers come out of their manginas.

Sexiest body, best sounding motor, colors, options available at the time, STYLE...MK3 has it for me.
Mine's the MK2 16v, in Montana Green. One of the best handling FWD platforms ever made IMO, great engine that happily revs to 7k+, great gearbox, great BBS alloys, wide tires from the factory (195's, I believe), great interior with the Recaro buckets, nice and supportive. Great for driving spiritedly. Great gauge panel with everything that you'd expect in a sporty car. 160mph speedo, 8k RPM tach.. Ah, I love MK2's. Great body lines. Wonderful fender flares.

PS: How's that VWMS manifold and that 700 dollar carbon hatch? Fitment issues/pros/cons/pictures would be cool.

MKIV for nostalgic reasons. It was my first and last VW. Didn't grow up drinking the VW cool-aid, so I can't pick the MKI or II.

Wow, suprised at the love MkV is getting, especially since MkVI is the same but fixed everything that was wrong with it.

    Voted MkII as my fave.

MkII and MKI easily #1 and #2
Best looking, lightweight, and fun to drive

    then....
    MKVI
    MKIV
    MKV
    MKIII

Not fair to talk about MKVII, as i havent seen it in person

p.s. EVEN the europeans, who hated the mk3 when it came out, are really starting to appreciate how great the car is/was.
Despite my defense of the Mk.III on the last page you kind of make me want to light mine on fire. Please stop.

I'm changing my vote for favorite generation of GTI to the 1983 Ford Escort RS1600i.

Agreed couldn't have said it shorter or better. A cheap VR and 800 bucks later plus some deletes, I'm doing 0-60 in 5.88 and 1/4th 12.6-12.8, depending on how bad I want to beat my clutch up that day. List me another 3 grand car that does that, and I'll cook some eggs for your granny.

A Fox Body Mustang built by my friend Alan has the following:

    car itself: $1500

    Junkyard 5.0 from a Pull-a-part: $150

Junkyard "GT40" heads and intake from an Explorer: $400

    Random crap: $400

    Drag radials: $300

1/4 passes consistently in the 12.20 area...

    My granny prefers them boiled.

EDIT: his 0-60 is much better too.

Mk3s are ugly. And the poster I replied to didn't discuss aesthetics anyway... And I'll say this: notch-back Fox Body>mk3 VW.

Please just leave this forum. You never post any REAL information worth reading (except for your wonderful stories you make up from time to time).
