Sorry for not reading 11+ pages, but MK2 2.0 16V ABA was the zenith of the GTi Mark as was the 92 Jetta GLI.

Those cars had to compete with the Saab SPG, and Volvo 850 GL-T.

92 was VW's best year by far. The first year the Vr6 was introduced in in North America ala the SLC.

I would give my left kidney up for a clean unmolested 92 GTI 16V or GLi.

The power to weight ratio in those cars was amazing. And they were such a blast to drive.

Tons, but the MKIII still fun and cheap to be respectably quick. Thats why I don't get the hate. Parts are cheaper than MKIVs and they generally run better times or the same for less money...

Except they didn't, because a 900 SPG or 850 GL-T was significantly larger, significantly more powerful and around twice the price....

Post list of mods, videos, and timeslips. I call

5.88 0-60 does not = 12 second quarter mile time
$800 in mods does not = 12 second passes in a naturally aspirated 6 cylinder car, when it runs 15's stock
"Plus some deletes"? Speak english please

By the way, my grandma likes eggs poached.

90 Talon Tsi AWD = $750 (or cheaper)
    3'' downpipe= $100
    Walbro 255hp fuel pump= $80
Keydiver chip for 650cc injectors (old school)= $100
    Injectors = $200
Possibly a clutch depending on whats in there already= $350
Front mount intercooler setup = cheap but ill go high and say $500

Then you can easily do 12.5 or better time and time again.
You could even spend a little more money and have yourself an 11 second car for under 3,000.

I have no words for how much that bothers me.

I hear the phrase "I need parts for my emm kay vee turbo," (or variations thereof, depending on generation, mostly Mk.III-VI) almost every day. It makes me want to ask a Supermarine Spitfire owner if anyone has ever complimented their "em kay ex aye vee."

I've owned or driven every generation of gti at one point or another, and have had extensive experience fixing/modding them. Out of the box I would have to say the MK1 rabbit gti gets my vote. Great car to drive and it has a character unlike any other generation IMHO. For overall comfort, cheap mod ability while still retaining a connection between the car and the road that many new cars lack, I'd have to say MK3. Most junkyards around here have loads of them available, and their biggest factory fault (the atrocious suspension) can easily be fixed with a cup kit.
The MK5 and 6 both seem to be boated far-flung images of what the GTI used to be to me, but the MK7 looks to be a turn in the right direction. We'll see. I do not like the MK4, my brother and a few friends have owned them and they were a pain to work on and had some of the stupidest problems I've run into. They were also VW's 1st attempt at moving the brand "up-market." The MK2 is a good car, but it looks like a fat MK1 to me. Maybe with a vr6 in it I would have a different opinion. Just my little spiel.

If the 5 and 6 are bloated and off the mark why does the 7 look like it'll be any better? It's the same size, right? I'm not arguing, just seeing if I'm missing something here.

Well for starters it is the first GTI to be lighter than the previous generation, and if the numbers prove correct, it is a significant upgrade in terms of power out of the box. It also incorporates track technology into a street car, something VW hasn't done much of since the early generations as far as I know. I don't necessarily dislike the 5 or 6, but I will say they felt less engaging to drive to me than the older cars. That being said, I did like the MK6 better than the 5. VW improved what is essentially the same platform. I should also say that by "bloated" I mean big and heavy, without the chassis or power to even things out. The MK7 looks to be an improvement in both of those areas.

Power: cams, ported head, exhaust, intake chip, 3.94 r&p

Free power: ported exhaust manifold, Weight reduction.

13s aren't too difficult or expensive. Can be had on stock gearing, open diff with cams, exhaust chip and a filter/CAI and taking out the rear seats and spare if you're a good driver.

It's not just VW. Most companies do that. We never get nice things. Hell, even FORD, an AMERICAN company, doesn't offer its Focus RS here.

"As anyone who has ever tinkered with an old BMW engine or looked out on to the wing of a jet can attest, pure response to engineering requirements can sometimes deliver just as much pleasure as a more intentionally aesthetic design process."
