Get a diesel fifth gear.
If that's too easy, there used to be an aftermarket manufacturer who took five speeds and made them six speeds. There was one recently for sale in the classifieds. Lots right up to the ol eight valve.

has anyone heard of, attempted, or succeeded? im just exploring all possibilities. and 65 at 3500 rpms is unacceptable on florida roadways, are there any direct bolt ups within the oem spectrum?

Broke's 5th great swap pages.....

Supplemental to Broke's pages, 5th swap done in the car.

I used an 0.71:1 5th in an AUG box. Going through the gears ended up something like "whoop, whoop, whoop, whoop,bwwwwaaaaaaaw.....

Thanks guys, lovin the links, I went through broke vw's page, very good ideas but 5th is already long enough for mee. I want that racecar feel through every shift. Will a 6 speed from a mark 2 or 3 fit?

Didn't the scirocco have a six speed? You're better off finding one from a scirocco as it is the same platform as the cabby: ie MK1

I have always been tickled by the idea of a 6 speed, but the variety of 020's that we have, it is pretty easy to find a better ratio for your needs. I really don't like close ratio gears, I would much rather have a 3rd gear that starts out at a lower rpm and will let me hit 80 if I run it up to 5500rpm. Build the engine to support the gears. I am putting an early FF in mine which will help my millage and top speed but it still has a hefty final drive. The CHE and similar were used on to 2.0 ABAs, and have a very similar ratio except for they have a taller final drive and a shorter 5th. Swap in an 0.71 5th and you will be doing under 2500 at 65.
I am surprised no one suggested this site yet.

The calculator will provide you with hours of entertainment. You can play with rpms and speeds to figure out what tranny will be better for you. I still support your ambition to rig a 6 speed, but if you want to spend less money in the long run, I believe you can find something to better quit your needs by looking into different 020's. My inner math nerd loves talking gear ratios! My inner technician is getting lazy and goes towards the path of doing less work and spending less money haha

I say get the .75 5th off early mk2s I went over 100 at 4000rpms with that gear!

im quite sure there was never a 6 speed 020.
vw didnt have a OE six speed until 2002 in the gli/gti 24v vr6.

thanks a ton, that calculator is awesome! a 0.71 at 5000 rpm is supposed to pull 130. thats good for me. the problem i have with a 5 speed vs a 6 is that all the stop and go in my coastal city is rediculous and you always have to downshift. if i had that 6th gear, i could be staying in 5th with no problem at all. and have the balls in that gear to avoid downshifting

If you can build your engine and suspension to take you to 5000rpm with an 0.71, there you go!
As far as wanting the 6 speed to have balls when you are in fifth...find an 020 4th gear with balls, then get a lower 5th. A 0.91 4th gear is close to the 0.89 5th that we have in out close ratio trannys. That will give you the current 5th gear feel or close to it. Then, find a 3rd gear with balls. Then, tack a pair of balls on your engine. Longer gears will only hold you back as far as your engine. Long gears can be fun because you can really run them through the full range of rpms IMHO.
Just dont hang a pair of rubber balls from the back![]()

I found it! There was an aftermarket kit for the 020 which made it a six speed, Option 6 by VL Enterprises. No longer available new, of course.
BrokeVW tore one down.

Here's a recent thread about it.

yeah, I see this idea hitting me hard in my back pocket. Definitely gonna keep it in the back of my mind. I need to swap to urythane, bigger brakes, coilovers and other junk first lol but I do see this thread going interesting directions. What are some other trans mods you guys have seen or done?

Yeah, Broke found lots of garbage in that built 6 speed.
There are a couple of 02M in a Mk1 builds I found:
A solo race Mk1 Rabbit
"E Prepared Solo2 car + 1.8T + 02M = Grassroots $2012 build" http://tinytex.com/5694164
and
A diesel extended cab caddy

Thanks guys, I'm getting stoked about dropping a six in mine. I need to deal with my water pump first though

Also, is anybody here familiar with the 02m? Would appreciate some more info on that

If you follow the threads I posted, there is lots of good leads and detail to study...
Seems the builders are too busy driving their cars to be posting.
Google search "02m site:http://forums.vwvortex.com"
Report back later with weigh, box dimensions, stock mounting points and shift linkage....
From what I see there is a fair amount of fabrication to get it into a mk1 chassis. The trick is going to be to find as many detailed "How too" swap links and get the stock doaner car for each major component.
I believe the 02M is fro a VR6 engine.
I would be curious if Black Forrest has done any R&D since they seem to have a VR6 in a Mk1 mounting hardware kit. They seem to be very proud with that driver side transmission mount...
Stage One they call it. Can anyone tell me what transmission that is @ 00:38 of the fist video?:
That's not a six speed in this video:
It looks like maybe a greasy 02A with some beefy bushings??
http://store.blackforestindustries.c...k1vr6cost.html
The point is there is not enough room for it with a VR6...

My two big issues are gonna be the case matching up and retrofitting the linkage. Ill have to bum around the golf/ jetta 1 and tdi forums to see if there's any six speed builds
