So i might have a chance to get a 86 scirocco 16v that's been totally built up for 2500 bucks. the guys has done a lot to the car and he is a complete vw nut but i'm just wondering if i should get a car that old and if there is anything i should be cautious about.

I think that you should go for it if you want it. Just ask a lot of questions and make sure that there is nothing bad that you should know about before buying. If you do decide to buy it for safety sake replace the timing belt and tensioner because we wouldn't want you to cause any damage to the engine if it can be avoided. And always keep in mind that it is a 27 year old car and it needs to be taken care of to keep it going. Hope this helps and welcome to the forums, hope you stay.

Thanks for the input. I have seen pictures of it from when it had body work done and the guy flared out the fenders and it has the body kit? so its got a nice black paint job. i gave the guy a call and left a message so hopefully i'll find out more info later today. My brother has always been a volkswagen guy up until a couple years ago he had to get rid of his gti for a truck and i have a truck right now that gets bad mpg's and i know i want a vw for a car and this one is supposedly a sweet car. from what i know it has stainless tt exhaust on it brand new suspension and he rebuilt the head back in 09 and it also has euro headlights, turn signals and bumpers. bad part is it has 240,000 miles on it

One word of advice.....check it over very carefully before buying. I learned my lesson the hard way, bought a Scirocco that someone had "done a bunch of stuff on", and it turned out to be a hideous mistake.

That car never really ran right, and had a complete hack job done on the suspension, which I couldn't really see until after I had bought it, trailored it home, and took it to get inspected.

After putting another $2000 into the darn thing (I bought it for $2500), it ran for a total of 6 months (I owned it for 2 years). I ended up parting it out and selling the shell for $700.

Lesson learned for me...I will never again buy a car that has been modded in any way. Bone stock or not at all! (but that's just me)

I decided against buying it. I talked to the guy on the phone and he was super cool and told me everything about the car and what was wrong with it but its just too old and to many miles. I'm trying to find a mk3 jetta golf or gti right now instead

MkIII?, you mean A3 chassis, don’t you. <-- note lack of question mark...

Well, there are those who campaign a Scirocco and those who don’t, sOK.

Just my opinnion but a Scirocco is not a car you buy as a daily driver unless you have vast experience working on them as they are old, parts are hard to find etc...

If you just want a VW with good gas mileage you are on the right track with a Jetta.

I modded my MK1, runs like a tiger, purrs like a kitten - but I'd never sell it to someone who was not a VW person...
