Thread: 2013 with water in trans?

  1. 10-01-2012 03:07 PM #1
So I picked up my shiny new 2013 SEL off the lot and love it thus far. However, after about two weeks I took it back to the dealership because it was having a strange jerking movement while driving and at stoplights. I also wanted to bring to their attention that the analog speedometer didn't match the digital speedo and the speedo/tach both had a sort of twitch to them. They said this was 'normal' and was reproduceable on another 2013 -- whatever I'll live with it.

Anyway back to the story... I left the car with them and they were able to reproduce the jerking problem and called VW. VW tech line says the valve body needed replaced in the transmission. They found it a little odd that this would fail at 800 miles. Anyway they went to replace it today after some shop failures and called with bad news. The tech found water in the transmission and VW now says to replace the entire transmission. Unfortunately this will take 7-10 days as it is shipping from Germany.

Has anyone else experienced a similar issue with the new '13 models? Engine is the 2.5 I5 with the six speed auto.

Not ranting or anything as I really like the car... just want to see if I'll be making frequent trips to the dealership for transmission swaps (all joking, of course )

My DSG trans in my '13 Passat TDI is flawless. No issues what so ever. That just makes me wonder how in the world did water get into the trans fluid. Have you been driving thru high water lately? lol. jk! At least youre getting a whole new trans, and not a rebuilt one. Good luck!

First I heard of this... sorry you had to be that guy.

Could have just been a defective trans from whoever they source them from. The part that interest me, is that they have to get the new one from Germany. I was under the impression that a lot of the parts were sourced here. That's one thing I hated about my previous VW's is that everything that broke had to be shipped from Germany, taking more time to repair.

Hope the car is trouble free after you get it back!

The body is build here (in and around TN), but I believe the engines and tranny's are still made in Germany.

No high water driving... in fact it had only been in one light rain shower... not even a car wash yet.

One of my coworkers (GTI driver) made a comment about the transmissions coming from Mexico and was a little confused as well as to why it would come from Germany. Maybe the parts houses aren't stocked with major parts like that for the '13s?

Oh well... Can't wait to get it back... at least I have a loaner car to drive from the lot!

DSG comes from Germany while the standard six speed automatic transmission comes from Mexico? Question mark is mine as I'm taking a guess here. Unless since it's a 2013 there are no really quantity of replacement parts here in North America.

The gas SEL doesn't come with the DSG (comes only on the TDI according to vw.com) so I'm guessing there just isn't local stock around.

The Trans is shipped from Germany or they could get one from TN. The engine is built in Mexico

Not sure why they're shipping from Germany when the Aisin 6-spd AT is sourced from Japan. Says so right on the bottom half of the window sticker of new 2.5L's equipped with AT: 2.5L comes from Mexico and the 6AT comes from Japan.

DSG used in VR6 cars & TDI's is sourced in Germany.

Seeing as the OP brought up the side issue of the speedo and tach... My '13 speedo and tach are twichless but I believe that the analog speedo does not register the same speed as the digital speedo does by design. The analog does read a bit higher, like 1 or 2 MPH higher.

My TDI engine and trans are sourced from Germany.

The 1-2 MPH higher happened on mine as well. The tech attributed it all to a software issue and, according to him, reported it to VW. Not a big issue as I've learned to deal with it...

I think that is a quirk in ALL analog speedo's. It happened when I had my '97 Mark VIII Lincoln against my Garman and also in my 05 F250 against a GPS......
